Knows which stones remember feet
Hands stay folded, calm and clean
Like they don’t know where they’ve been

Bartender leaves coins behind
Says, “You’re good, you’ve earned your time”
Kids don’t watch him when he moves
Everybody knows the rules

Like mercy’s easier than change

Say, “Sit it out, you’ve done enough”
In his hood he plays it straight
Acts like hunger learned to wait

They leave him money, leave him pride
Pay the past to stay inside
But the blood still wants its say
Even when the hands behave

He rides the train past yellow light
Past the streets that say goodnight
Crosses into borrowed sound
Faces don’t know who he was

Tourists hold their maps too tight
Wallets breathing, open wide
He feels the shame before the thrill
Feels his hands move on their will

Like that lie still ever works

They love him in this part of town
Where his sins can’t make a sound
On the other side of town
He becomes what won’t lay down

They forgive him back at home
Say, “You paid, now let it go”
But the night still knows his name
And the dark still knows his hands

It’s a muscle memory

You don’t teach a river dry
