Indeed, her debut album as Hite, the ethereally titled Light of a Strange Day (just released on Six Degrees), finds her in sublime form, a mix of folk simplicity and sumptuous soundscapes.

The first single is “Eliza Jane,” a visceral masterstroke of musical gossamer. “The song is about my brother,” she reveals, “who was born as my sister – showing up and changing my world order for the better.”

The first episode of our new Six Degrees podcast features label co-founder Bob Duskis in conversation with producer & author Ian Brennan. Brennan is known for traveling the World to produce projects with voices that would perhaps otherwise be unheard. Among the albums he has produced for Six Degrees are two volumes with the Grammy nominated Zomba Prison Project, the Romanian group Zmei3, former Thelonious Monster vocalist Bob Forrest and most recently Tanzania Albinism Collective. He has also produced the Grammy winning album, Tassili for Tuareg group Tinariwen, The Malawi Mouse Boys, the Good Ones and is an author, whose latest book is How Music Dies (Or Lives). In this free wheeling conversation Duskis & Brennan discuss making albums with untrained, non-musicians, that exist outside of typical “World Music” expectations, what it’s like traveling to far flung places and collaborating with your wife, the politics of music as a force for change and many other subjects.

Produced by longtime Brazilian Girls collaborator Frederik Rubens, the Let’s Make Love album came to life over the course of several years. Since they’re now scattered throughout the U.S. and Europe, the four band members assembled when possible to write and record, piggybacking those sessions onto gigs in Istanbul and Madrid and Paris and New York. Despite the distance, Brazilian Girls consistently found their chemistry as kinetic as when they first started out. “It’s a little astounding to us because we’ll go so long without playing, and then we get together and things just happen in this very harmonious way,” says Sciubba.
