There are certain nights that, when I DJ, I have absolutely no idea what I am going to spin. After all,  I approach the decks, armed to my ears with CD binders filled with all kids of genres, influences, styles, tempos and sonic weaponry; tools (if you will) for the dismantling and reassembling of the “self” through the kind of salvation that only music and dance provides. 

The following mix is a kind of "old-school-vs-nu-school"  Indo/Arab-centric vibes, that sources the sounds of a few music producing friends: Gaudi, Pierre Jean of Masaladosa, Govinda, Drum Spyder, MC Yogi, Amani of Desert Dwellers. This mix assembles itself as a spontaneously gentle combustion of tasty, unassuming groove over  the next 1:08:14

The wait is finally over. Fans of Seven Lions and Birds of Paradise (Bird of Prey + Gibson) have been waiting with bated breath for the exalted release of their first collaboration. Over the past year, Jeff Montalvo, has been releasing jaw-dropping remixes one after another, first taking on trance artists like Above & Beyond and Tritonal, and now, on Tuesday, Oct 16th, Skrillex's OWSLA label will be releasing an EP of his original tunes, Days to Come. Blending soaring melodies with explosive drops, Montalvo has blazed a trail with his Seven Lions brand.

The story behind this collaboration is intertwined with Montalvo's own ascension, which begins when he was living with Torin Goodnight, a.k.a. Bird of Prey in southern California. Montalvo was inspired by the deep bass music Goodnight and his Birds of Paradise collaborator Tyler Gibson were producing to take the powerful half-time breaks aesthetic back to his first love: trance. The rest, as they say, is history, as Seven Lions won contest after contest and was tapped to remix huge artists and really became one of the premier producers seamlessly blending trance and dubstep.
 
Which brings us to "She Was." After a couple years, the seeds were sewn for the three Santa Barbara-based producers to unite.

Brendan Angelides is a Los Angeles-based electronic music producer who records and performs live as Eskmo. His multi-genre compositions have been featured on influential labels like Ninja Tune, Warp Records and Planet Mu. While Angelides’ tracks encompass a wide range of electronic styles, he avoids classifications. Much like his previous releases, ‘Language’ is reflective and constantly exploring new terrain. The album cover, which was created by Trek Matthews for the project, shows the Egyptian god Thoth who is the master of writing, magic, science and healing. Above him are the merging of sun and moon and Ouroboros. The themes within the tracks range from the Self to relationship, fear, nostalgia and the sonic interpretation of not folding as expressed in “World of Dread.” The ‘Language’ EP oozes classic Eskmo textures while diving into emotive rushes, minimally avante-pop melodies and chunky dance aesthetics turned on their head.

His 2010 self-titeld full-length, released on Ninja Tune, was described by Future Sequence as “Create(ing) his own sound.” and BBC Music noted the album as “Electrifyingly enveloping…Mind-melting invention.” Ninja Tune recording artist and film composer Amon Tobin hailed his work as “some of the best production I’ve heard in recent times” in 2009. Shortly thereafter, the pair teamed up to release a collaborative project under the name ESKAMON on Eskmo’s own record label, Ancestor, in early 2010. The ‘Language’ EP is the latest Eskmo release on Ancestor since his collaboration with Tobin.

This live* mix represents a treasure of old-to-nu-skool trans-Arabic motifs dropped in my set at Giza, Egypt, during the auspicious winter solstice gathering of 2012. 

It was recorded during the The Great Convergence, an amazing gathering held at the pyramids of Giza. The event was conceived by Tamer El-Shakhs and  produced by the excellent production team at The Do Lab, (thank you all!!) 

Many thanks to friends Jef Stott, Nominus, Drumspyder, Zeb SpyfromCairo Visini, Paula Peek Kraus, Said Mrad and Ganga Giri for the tracks they produced that made this cut….

This is the first song from my upcoming EP collaboration with "Rising Appalachia".  If you dont know who they are, I recommend that you educate yourself swiftly as they are the JAM;  Beautiful, elegant, sultry sisters from the South.  

Leah and Chloe play Fiddle, Banjo, Guitar, and create eloquent vocal harmonies that melt my heart.  We met 4 years ago in India and have reconnected to blend our sounds together.

They compose original music as well as traditional music from around the world.  This song "Sunu" is an african/appalachian fusion piece.  

We have had several rag tag recording sessions around the US (pictures coming soon hehe) and have had some of the most fun I have ever had in my life collaborating.  The Joy I have in my heart when I create this music is inexplicable in words.  This project makes me feel bliss.  

We're working on a full live performance also which is....dare I say.... mucho legendary
