Singularity - Vain (feat. Evan Duffy)

For a while now, The Untz staff has been absolutely enamored with a certain youngster out of the UK. Classically trained violinist Ot Moruno Bird has been releasing a steady stream of chillout and downtempo tunes with addictive grooves and hypnotic beats. As SizzleBird, the understated producer prolifically sends brilliant waves of serenity out into the ether. We are lucky enough to bring you "How We Were," today. While the track didn't make the final tracklist for Illuminate, his forthcoming album out next week (December 10th), it did make its way into our hearts, immediately. It's the perfect introduction to the SizzleBird oeuvre for the uninitiated, and fans of Emancipator, Govinda, and Kalya Scintilla will immediately fall in love all over again. As Bird describes the album, "The ideas are all down to moments in time, and the emotions those moments have given me. The melodies and harmonies that reflect those moments are what give importance to the tracks on the album; in a way illuminating what I was feeling at that moment in time."

In December, 2013, David Block was invited to participate in Matt Geraghty's "21" project. Matt's vision was to bring in musicians from all different styles/countries/ethnicities and create 21 days of improvisational music. Over the 21 days, 43 new bands were created. Every session was completely unique and fully improvised. David was invited to take part of Session 16 and had the idea of doing an "improv" production session. Session 16 consisted of Danny Musengo (singer/songwriter ), Adriano Santos (percussion), Victor Provost (steel pan) & Matt Geraghty (stand-up bass). They immediately clicked and started making incredible music. David sat back and listened for an hour while the artists got to know each other. At the end of the session, David picked his favorite song they had created and one by one, recorded all the parts, free-styled in one take by each of the musicians. Starting with guitar, Danny Musengo sings the song "Here for a Moment" completely freestyle.  All the supplemental parts were recorded in one take each. A total of 17 individual layers of instruments by 4 musicians. Only one mic was used and all tracks were recorded in two hours in Matt's apartment. Stand up bass was recorded in the bathroom :) It was a true freestyle recording session with no preconceived ideas/direction. 75 hours in the lab and the song "Here for a Moment" was born.  

"The finale of 21 takes a twist on our theme of improvised music collaboration and brings together electronic music producer David Block of The Human Experience, with filmmaker Laura Newman, to make a fully produced/mastered track and music video. While all of the sessions thus far have focused on live sessions, Day 21 took the improvised pieces from the musicians from Day 16 (Danny Musengo, Adriano Santos, Victor Provost and Matt Geraghty) and remixed them into an innovative song and music video." - Matt Geraghty Project

It has been over 3 years since the original and I know some of you have made deep bonds with this track, so I wanted to keep that same feeling but bring it to life with a more polished & engaging version that'll take you back; this time with bigger atmosphere. It surprisingly took a lot longer than it did to make the original in the first place but I think the little details needed to be added to really bring out it's delicacy. Hope it'll bring back some good memories :)

This is the track titled Distance from my EP.

It took me some time to work out the right melody for this track as I had been inspired to use the pluck sound heard in this tune but wasn't sure what to do with it, eventually coming through with the falling melody that you can hear repeated here. The harmony and sense of space was something very important for this track.
