A: The Sect - Ulysses [TSMDIGI007]

Displaying our cultural (ahem)... 'innocence' by taking inspiration from '80s TV animation 'Ulysses 31' rather than other, more sophisticated source material, TSM returns from winter hibernation with this stripped back, neuro stepper.  Spacey, sci-fi pad work lends the intro a melancholic, dystopian air, before the drop comes and brings with it a pulsating, modulated bassline, which morphs and evolves throughout alongside aggressive synth and FX stabs.  Razor-sharp beats keep things nice, tight and rolling - we've been asked about this one a lot when we've played it out and that's normally quite a good sign.

War drums in full effect as we go in again for Voltan - influenced heavily by our very first release as The Sect (back in 2003).  This track is a similarly high-octane, amen-fuelled affair, with arps and rave stabs coming to a crescendo before the snarling bass and breaks hit.  As you'd expect with roots being revisited, there are plenty of bleeps and edits for The Sect die-hards and it's only slightly delayed due to us nearly supplying a final master with some of the sounds muted.  They're back in now.

I've always wanted to do kinda of blues track, and i felt that this was the right time and EP to do it, The Reborn is groovy at a certain point, the but the vibe isn't happy all the time, and at this one, i wanted to do something groovy as it can get, and thats the result. During the process of production, Blazy came at my studio and heard the track, and suddenly he was: ''oh man, this is like Aura Vortex reading my mind kinda of track'', and after a few hours working together, the track was touched by this glance of power called Blazy.

TECH 158 – Document One – How Low Can You Get? / Girl

Without compromise, without fuss, the Document One boys have established themselves as certified production dons. They've managed to weave strands from soul, jazz, hip-hop, techno and funk together into something that's always just a bit unpredictable. Well, that's not quite true. The one thing you can predict with certainty is that, every time, they'll do some serious damage in the dance. And here's their new release to prove it.

“How Low Can You Get?” opens in a sci-fi landscape populated by sweeps of pad and distant shimmers of reverberating hits. As high-pressure swells of bass signal the approach of the drop, digital glitches in the high-end take us further into tech paranoia. How low can you get? Pretty damn low, as the stripped-back, kick-heavy beat supports the drop of weighty sub-shattering basslines. This is dark, insistent and powerful, playing at the borders of the DnB genre without ever sacrificing dancefloor vibes.

“Girl”, on the other hand, might just be Document One's deepest excursion into soul territory so far. An RnB vocal riff, surrounded by loose percussion and fragile keys that meld into pads, hints at where this track is headed. Make no mistake, though, along with the melodic elegance and that beautiful lighters-up breakdown, there's an undercurrent of energy. Expertly constructed surges of bass drive the track onwards under popping beats. This is fluid drum 'n' bass music for raves and airwaves alike.

Once again, Document One have shown their ability to combine production technique and musicality with the fundamental quest to get the party moving. The two tracks on this release are almost opposite in tone, night and day, tech and soul, but the fingerprints of Doc One are unmistakeable on both. It seems there's still a lot more genre-bending innovation left to come.

It happened during the summer of 2000. North America’s most prominent drum and bass DJs joined forces to create the legendary crew known as PLANET OF THE DRUMS. Using their combined muscle to push drum and bass music into the spotlight of the main stage they toured tirelessly for well over a decade, fronted by the vocal rhyme animal known as Messinian. Their incessant drive and motivation helped set the groundwork of the scene that exists today.

Feeling their work completed, the team turned their focus to personal projects and the PLANET OF THE DRUMS program was retired. But as was soon discovered, the drum and bass scene in North America began a slow freefall into underground obscurity.

This could not stand.

Reuniting in 2017, the PLANET OF THE DRUMS crew returned to continue their original mission - celebrating, honoring and advancing drum and bass music. “AWAKENING” represents a retrospective of some of their favorite sounds, highlights and moments from the past year. What always made POTD special was the compelling combination of the boys’ varied styles - AK and his raw motherfucking breakbeats. Dara’s rolling dancefloor vibes. OK so when I first started listening to electronic music, back in the early 90s, long tracks seemed to be the the norm. Acts like Underworld, LFO, Orbital and the Drum Club regularly delivered epic tracks that combined ambient sounds with techno and electronica, tracks that placed the emphasis on taking the listener for a ride, gradually letting the tracks unfold, rather than quick builds and drops. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good drop as much as the next raver, but every now and again it's nice just to take it down a bit and let a track evolve more gradually. So that was my thinking behind this new single. 

I've always wanted to put together a long track and although this was was a real labour of love with a lot false starts and a crazy amount of studio hours spent on it but it was fun to do. A track like this would probably be seen as commercial suicide normally but fuck it, I'm giving it away so it doesn't count. Anyway it's good to mix things up every now and again. 

So there you go, Vision In Leather. If you like the sounds then download away, no requests for emails, no requests for likes, just the music. Also if you want the WAV then you can it get here...
