Uhadi is the isiXhosa (a South African Bantu people) name for a large percussion bow with calabash resonator. The performer strikes the string of the bow with a reed or small stick while closing the calabash against the chest. Umrhubhe is a similar instrument, but the role of the calabash is replaced by the player’s mouth, which amplifies the overtones of the single string. The instruments both generate simple two note chords, which are played in a rhythmic manner. The piece Uhadi/Umrhubhe is music for these African Classical Music instruments written for the Western Art Music violin, and does not claim to be an epigone of the instrument. 

UHADI/UMRHUBHE - for solo violin

Chris Skipper is an award-winning, internationally renowned British and South African composer, sound designer and music producer. He has scored virtually all genres and for all forms of visual media ranging from feature documentaries to online viral videos and memorable TV commercials.

Recently, Skipper founded SONIC FUTURES (www.sonic-futures.com) - a bespoke sonic branding and podcast company. His music has also appeared on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, CNN, FOX SPORTS ASIA, BBC RADIO 1, CHANNEL 4 (UK), FREMANTLEMEDIA and PIVOT TV (USA).

Having scored over 100 TV commercials, Skipper has worked with high-end clients including SAMSUNG, DJI, HONDA, YAMAHA, KFC, UNILEVER, NESTLE, TOYOTA and NIVEA just to name a few. 

After receiving his degrees in music from the University of Cambridge and the University of Bristol, Skipper was given the opportunity to work in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Manila Philippines and is now based in London, UK. During this journey he has met many passionate musicians and has continued to conduct lectures on classical music, film music production and conducting. His understanding of music production has led to him working as a mastering engineer and music producer for many artists including; THE KANONOS (USA/UK/VIETNAM), SPACE PANTHER (USA/VIETNAM), and WILLOW (UK).  

Skipper is an emerging and exciting talent respected for his ability to create and cultivate music that becomes a key part in articulating characterisation, driving narrative, evoking mood and heightening emotions.
