Suffice to say, everyone respects Kool G Rap’s gangsta! Rolling Stone Magazine once quipped “before Kool G Rap, New York didn't really have the street rap that could hold its own against what artists such as L.A.'s Ice-T and N.W.A were churning out, and G Rap excels at the street narrative.” The legendary emcees influence still resounds today as evidenced by Pusha T’s “King Push” where he name drops the Queen’s emcee “rage against the machine/black Zach De La Rocha/and a cranberry roaster/inside track on a G Rap poster.” As a pioneer of Mafioso Hip-Hop, Kool G Rap is often cited by fellow emcees and critics as one of the most influential and trend-setting emcees of the past two decades. Whether as a member of the ground-breaking Juice Crew (with which he helped create the blueprint for a posse cut with “The Symphony” and likewise for his contribution to Heavy D’s “Don’t Curse” which also featured Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Q-Tip & Pete Rock & CL Smooth), or his numerous classic LP’s with DJ Polo (1989’s Road To The Riches, 1990’s Wanted: Dead Or Alive and 1992’s controversial Live And Let Die).  

After disbanding from DJ Polo, Kool G Rap started his solo career with his debut solo-LP  4,5,6 in 1995 which featured production from Buckwild and guest appearances from Nas--it has been his most commercially successful solo-LP; reaching #24 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. This was followed by Roots of Evil in 1998 and The Giancana Story in 2002, which included the hit single, “My Life" featuring Talk Box legend G-Wise and it reached #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. In the following years, G Rap would go on to release two more solo-LP’s (2007’s Half A Klip which featured production from DJ Premier & Marley Marl & 2011’s Riches, Royalty, Respect) and he continued to flex his lyrical chops on projects from The Brand New Heavies, Fat Joe, M.O.P., Pete Rock, N.O.R.E., Mobb Deep, Big L, Reflection Eternal, Lyricist Lounge 2, G Dep, King Tee, Ghostface, Ras Kass, UGK, Statik Selektah, LL Cool J, Wu-Tang Clan, Alchemist, Raekwon and Rick Ross among others and there were even rumors of G Rap signing to both Rocafella and G-Unit records; and at one point Maybach Music.

Likewise, Necro has also carved out his own very unique standing in the industry, whether it was playing guitar in a metal band at the tender age of 11, rhyming alongside his brother Ill Bill, producing his own material and for artists such as Non-Phixion, Cage, & Raekwon, or creating his own Independent label, Psycho+Logical-Records, which has thrived for over a decade now and released over two-dozen projects (including nine of his own).  Necro has toured the globe many times over, been a participant in some of the genre’s top festivals (Rock The Bells & Paid Dues) and even created his own film production company. “The Godfathers album is about pure east coast lyricism over hardcore beats. Kool G Rap is the legendary godfather of all criminal street gangster rap, he invented most of what you see today and lyrically every dope emcee is inspired by him; including myself. On the flipside of that coin, you have me, the underground king of Death Rap and extreme hip-hop, nobody in the field gets more respect than me for brutal rhymes and hardcore production. Since we are both godfather’s of our own respective styles, this collaboration was a natural and overdue one” Necro asserts. 

The Godfather’s (Kool G Rap & Necro) will release their collaborative project, “Once Upon A Crime” on 11-19-2013 and it will be released on RBC/Pyscho+Logical-Records.

CRAZE & TroyBoi - Baby Gurl

Just landed in Winnipeg! Verrrrry excited to play a 45 set tonight at The Goodwill, and judge the Red Bull Thre3Style Canadian national finals this weekend with Z-Trip, Thugli, Hedspin, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (how about that for a line-up!?). Seriously. 

Accordingly, today's #TBT SoundCloud post is dedicated to my Winnipeg homies Pip Skid and John Smith, who worked on this song from an incredibly fun project. 10 years ago this month (!), we released a CD & 12" on my own label, First Things First. "Taking Care Of Business" was the product of a 2-and-a-half week recording session in Halifax, based around a few shows in Eastern Canada. At the time, I had been DJing for Pip after he moved out to Halifax and I was a big fan of not only his music but his work ethic and focus. I was also a big fan of the label that he was a part of (Peanuts & Corn, shoutout to mcenroe - I still owe you something for that Bob James record you sent me), and in particular rapper John Smith, who I thought was a great balance of tough and witty, and that I had recently had rap on one of my mixtapes. They had already done an album together as Hip-Hop Wieners and I liked their chemistry, so I set out to make a DJ-centric rap album from the ground up - from beginning to end.

Featured here is the 'DJ Theme' song "Murphy's Law" (featuring Sleep) to my Soundcloud as an audio accompaniment to this post. It's kinda like my version of 'Ugly People Be Quiet' or 'Alladin's On A Rampage' - just not as classic. 

In retrospect, the whole project was an amazing experience. I learned so much about how the business works: physical production, distribution, promo, radio, video, licensing, budgeting, touring -- many lessons which influenced how I approach my career to this day. I'm still very proud of the music that we made together, and it was an experience that I am very happy I went through when I did. It was a good primer for handling things to come. This is turning into a bit of an 'acceptance speech', which I normally detest and dismiss as self-indulgent, but I'm on a roll here and reminiscing while 20,000 feet above Thunder Bay, so bear with me.

Thank you to: Greymatter (who helped engineer the album), Sleep (who recorded vocals and toured with us during the making of this project), Gordski & Jorun Bombay (who contributed 3 beats each to the project), mcenroe (who added a remix on the 12"), Kunga219 & Tachichi (both featured on 'Get Nice'), Jason Lapeyre (who made the 'I Ain't Lazy' & 'Collecting Empties' videos for next to nothing -- we made the latter for the cost of the returned beer bottles in the video), Yosuke (who released the album in Japan), my manager Mike D, Troy Neilson (who helped it chart with radio promo), and ______ (who I am surely forgetting... like I said, 10 years). I asked a lot of favours and patience in making something like this happen, and for your help I am grateful. And of course to Pip & Smitty: if an internet post is a remotely relevant 'thank you', well, thank you. Too many stories to commit to this touch screen right now, and I'm thankful for all of them. Even that awful place I made us stay in Saint John, and running out of gas halfway between Fredericton and Moncton. I'll stop. 

I recently saw this album pop up for download on one of those blogspots with every-album-your-HD-can-handle on it. I'm not sure if it's still up there... those things disappear faster than politicians' promises after election, but give it a Google. The positive, well thought out review encouraging people to check it out made me happy, in all of it's friendly pirating intent. Maybe it will convince you to check it out, and if so, by all means grab it. Another selection from my project with the Afiara Quartet entitled "Spin Cycle". This project was produced in late 2014-early 2015 in collaboration with 4 Canadian composers (Laura Silberberg, Dinuk Wijeratne, Kevin Lau, Rob Teehan). Here's how it worked:

Phase 1: 4 composers wrote 4 original pieces for the Afiara String Quartet. Pieces were recorded.

Phase 2: Skratch Bastid remixed each of the pieces, using select parts that were replayed by the string quartet, sampled, and scratched.

Phase 3: The 4 composers remixed the remixes by writing new pieces based on the remix. Skratch Bastid & Afiara Quartet performed these pieces live and recorded them.

This track is Phase 3 of Kevin Lau's piece, titled "Second Wind", recorded live at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. We will be working on another phase of this piece for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's 2016 season!
