Born atop the forgotten ruins of a crumbling city, a new civilization had emerged from the ruin wrought by demonkind upon the landscape that lay beneath them. Lead by their prophets of a new and powerful faith, the people of this civilization had risen up against the demon kings, wielding the magic of their divine allies as weapons with which to exorcise their being once more from the land. This war though hard fought had born fruit, and with the slaying of the final demon the people had rejoiced, celebrating their victories with monumental constructions to mark the beginning of a new and golden era. Foremost of these was the great cathedral that lay at the heart of their new city, built both as a space of worship for the populace and as an eternal ward of imprisonment for the souls of demonkind which could not be slain, forever condemning them to an incorporeal existence under the watchful eye of the divine.

Ages had passed since then, and time had once again ground its steady edge against the minds of the people and upon the stones and timbers that had supported the great city for so long. Ritual had been forgotten, and structures of greater grandeur had been built as the city expanded, relegating it’s once monumental cathedral to neglect. Thus it was that the falling of only a single candle had lit an aged timber in it’s great hall, in so doing weakening the ancient wards that had kept the demonic spirits at bay. Ever vigilant in their ceaseless desire to escape, the demon kings fanned this flame with their focused ire, nurturing it from a single mote into a overwhelming conflagration that tore at the runic chains that had bound them for so long. Before long, the roaring of the flames was augmented by the howls of demonic spirits set free from a millennia of imprisonment, their visages taking form in the fire as manifestations of their burning rage. As the inferno bellowed ever higher, the city cowered in fear, for it was clear that the time of DIVERGENCE had come once more.

EATBRAIN unleashes the full fury of their horde with the fourth installment in their DIVERGENCE compilation series, a gargantuan 26 track compilation filled to the brim with new tracks from EATBRAIN mainstays and newcomers alike. Brought together by their affinities for EATBRAIN’s unrestrained neurofunk sound, the artists within deliver a tour de force of the label’s guiding philosophy with ferocious basslines and terrifying sonic atmospheres alike, delivering a mammoth series of tracks set to inspire the fervor of the label’s horde in the months to come.

An observer stood upon a rooftop, gazing out over the metropolis that shimmered beneath him. To all outward appearances, it was an idyllic landscape. Busy & bustling, sure, but in ways that spoke of efficiency and the success of their kind. To them, it was a monument to their collective greatness that they could construct the steel-boned monoliths that reached upward to the heavens, but for the lone rooftop figure, a very different view was laid out below. His gaze cut through the superficial, and saw the city for what it truly was: a TORN PLACE.

Within his eyes those same monoliths represented not success in their glittering facades, but rather the greed, avarice, and corruption of those who dwelled within. He saw the rampant struggle to reach their peaks, the drive to triumph over one another, that also drove its champions to madness as they buckled under the weight of what they had done. As his gaze fell downwards the observer saw the destitute prostrate themselves upon the city’s streets, forced by some cruel twist of fate or the actions of those whom had climbed above. They gathered on these avenues as plaque within veins, their continued accumulation a warning sign of the city’s impending cardiac arrest. Alongside them streamed endless waves of vehicles, emitting choking clouds of black filth that spiralled into the air. So constant were they, that day and night a smog hung above the city, a poison that hung as a sword above all. As the observer took in these things, the city itself seemed to morph before his very eyes, changing its form in accordance with its monstrous nature. Faces upon billboards became malevolent visages with gaping mouths stretched wide in hunger. The towers, once glittering, unfurled before him like the tendrils of some primordial behemoth. All rushed towards him, consuming him within an endless expanse of darkness which was dispelled a moment later. The observer stood once more upon the rooftop, and the city shimmered once more beneath him. But for he who had seen its true nature, it could never be home again.

FOURWARD return to EATBRAIN with the TORN PLACE EP, their second release following their breakout Wolfe EP on the imprint. The four tracks within feature their sound in full, with the titular TORN PLACE providing grounds for it alone whilst other tracks feature a who’s-who of fellow heavy hitters on the EATBRAIN lineup. TORN PLACE opens the EP with cinematic flair, in which otherwordly narration and frantic basses occupy space in equal measure. FOURWARD combine with eatbrain bossman JADE on MAKE SOME, a driving track that pushes forward on the constant report of its stabbing bassline. REDPILL brings his horror infused sound to the table with DIGEST, a collaboration that calls on the pairing’s jump up influences amongst sinister saws. ELBOW features the sounds of L 33 alongside the FOURWARD crew and rises upon booming percussion before launching into a peak section of mechanized highs and rumbling lows. With the TORN PLACE EP, FOURWARD launch their multifaceted sound further onwards and upwards.

Created beyond the reach of time was a being of singular purpose and identity, unknowable to those who dwelt within the presence of that same ever-flowing universal force. Its existence predated the creation of their universe, an event it had watched carefully with its many eyes focused upon that which took its fancy. Aloof as it was, it took interest in the most pivotal figures of that little universe, guiding their paths with nonchalant ease as they went about heroic lives within their insignificant realms. Their greatest triumphs, their most harrowing failures, the beginnings and endings of their myriad tales: all such were born of the fleeting desires of the being which lay beyond their minuscule conception.

Those minuscule creatures had given the being many names in their many languages and portrayed its form in innumerable fashions, each uniquely fantastic and decidedly far from the truth. The being cared not of these misinterpretations however, finding instead a humor in their inability to even scratch at the surface of its incomprehensible existence. Its true title was after all for them impossible to pronounce, and thus the being held a detached amusement for the names it had been given. In times long past it had been fate, providence and even kismet, but in this new age of their world such archaic titles held little meaning, and the being styled itself around a term it found most peculiar, guiding their world under the name of SELECTA.

NAIS makes his EATBRAIN debut with the SELECTA EP as he continues his meteoric rise in the Drum & Bass scene. Hailing from Russia, NAIS has delivered recent releases across labels such as Playaz Recordings and Kosenprod, as well as collaborations with longstanding heavyweights such as the TEDDY KILLERZ and forthcoming material on RAM Records. With the SELECTA EP representing the next step in his ambitious launch sequence, NAIS holds nothing back as he broadcasts a four track selection of brashly energetic neurofunk to the EATBRAIN horde.

The fires of the NEUROPUNK FORGE alight once more with the arrival of the WARHEAD EP, the latest release from rising Russian duo DESPERSION on NEUROPUNK RECORDS. Established in 2017, the duo have seen previous releases on a variety of labels including Ignescent, 0101 and Kill Tomorrow, within which they have displayed their development of a style that blends complex melodic motifs with aggressive percussive and bassline sequences for a synthesis formed of these two often disparate sounds. Now making their NEUROPUNK RECORDS debut, DESPERSION deliver four tracks in this signature style to create the latest set of auditory weapons straight from the NEUROPUNK FORGE.

Opened by the minor chords and arpeggios of the title track of the same name, the WARHEAD EP quickly erupts with low end weight leavened by the interspersion of melodic reprisals of its opening theme. The deceptively named PEACE which follows provides a slice of scathing neurofunk marked by the tonalities of the distorted hornlike synth that blasts above its rapidly moving bassline. OFFENSIVE next delivers an explosive barrage of transient percussive impacts that fall with perfectly planned precision amongst the tracks chaotic upper atmosphere. Closing the EP is I NEED YOU NOW, which departs from the hard charging energy of its predecessors to deliver a flowing vocal cut emblematic of DESPERSION’s melodic abilities.

With the WARHEAD EP, DESPERSION deliver a dynamic debut on NEUROPUNK RECORDS, showing a deft ability to craft beautiful melodic sequences and works of utmost sonic aggression in equal measure, marking themselves as a duo to watch as they emerge from the NEUROPUNK FORGE.
