Cascine introduces NOIA (@noianoianoia), the latest addition to our family of artists, and share the lead single from her inaugural EP (Habits), due out 10/14 via Cascine and Mexico's Buen Dia Records. "Nostalgia Del Futuro" is a contemplative piece of electronic pop written about our tendency to see the future as a perfect landing point - one that constantly eludes us. 

NOIA (Gisela Fulla-Silvestre) was born and raised in Barcelona, the only daughter of her activist and intellectual parents. Her father was part of a clandestine Communist party that fought against the Franco dictatorship, often spending time in prison as a result. Her mother was a pioneer in the field of child psychology. Together they fought for democracy in Spain, instilling in Gisela a deep reverence for community along the way. In addition to revolutionary discourse, music was a constant in her home – Traditional Catalan, Rumba, Flamenco and French artists were regularly heard. Her young mind grew fixated on philosophy while her heart became obsessed with music.

Having completed a degree in film scoring & sound design at Berklee, NOIA is now based in New York where she's developed a community of other obsessives who have pushed her to be as serious with her art as she is about her career. She took their advice and doubled-down on a body of work that captures her point-of-view on pop music. When director Allie Avital eventually introduced her to Cascine last spring, a mutual connection was formed and plans were made to work towards a release together.

NOIA describes her debut EP as, “a reflection of my many idiosyncrasies – deep solitude, rigid eating schedules like a retired old man, nostalgia for an imagined future, desired memories of a better past, bread with olive oil & avocado, masturbation, etc.” The four tracks on Habits reflect NOIA’s myriad musical and cultural influences. Everything from Dancehall to Tropicalia music to leftfield R&B are present, while the literature and cultural theory of Cavafy, Olaf Stapledon and Byung Chul Han are referenced in the lyrics, which are sung in a mix of Spanish and English. NOIA also incorporates her work as a sound designer for film, creating a range of custom percussive sounds – her snares are stacks of assorted foley items, while her hi-hats are comprised of digital distortion trash. “My music is maximalist or baroque in the way I have layers upon layers of sounds at work in the material,” she explained.

Although NOIA writes from a dense creative place, her music is accessible on the surface. Both casual listeners looking for a headphone jam and serious fans demanding a deeper experience with pop music will find much to appreciate in NOIA’s productions.

Hard Ton, Italy's extravagant duo of all things house music are back on Luv Shack Records, unleashing six steaming hot tracks on the "Queer Nation EP" - a precursor to the first full Hard Ton album that is due for 2017. "Queer Nation" has singer Max swapping his falsetto with a dark mangled voice, paying tribute to some essential queer icons over a dry acid house track that rejoices in repetition, and rightly so. "Classic Music" head-honcho and old timer Luke Solomon's remix of "Queer Nation" builds up an intense 707 drum pattern, underlining rhythm guitars and Max's voice, ending in a bold acid climax. Italian newcomers "Younger Than Me" also take on "Queer Nation", marrying an early 80's wave touch with a classic house approach. When Hard Ton pair up with ROTCIV, "Style Ga-Galore" awaits us. The cut up hushed vocals are thrown into a lush melange of filtered pad shots, a 303 bassline and a percussive house groove. "Yeah Yeah" featuring Moralez & Sames is an ode to early Detroit and Chicago house, with Max singing vigorously, syncopated hihats swirling and stabs nodding towards lil Louis. The final track is a LeSale disco dub of "The Way You Rock feat. Mirror People". LeSale strips the original drums completely, rearranging the vox, piano and synths to fit his disco workout edit style, adding a cheeky synth bassline to complete the boogie redress. Ivy Barkakati is an American DJ/producer based in Barcelona. She
presents the radio show Casa da Crega once a month on dublab.es. Star
Report, her solo debut, was released on Hospital Productions in 2014.
Her track "Mango Sheen" came out on Modern Obscure Music in 2016,
followed by a collaboration with Phran ("Impulse") on Rhythm Control
Barcelona in 2017. This year that same collaboration, this time under
the alias IVAN, sees the release of another track ("Manipulate Me") on
the new Australian label Best Effort.
