Alex Niggemann returns to the scene of so many fierce releases with his latest weapons-grade stormer. The Berliner pulls out all the stops on this release – Tangram (The Bright End) is a burner that slowly builds and builds, maintaining just the right amount of tension and release. 

Eventually, out of the precise interplay of elements, explodes a huge euphoric melody that will surely take the roof of many a club in the months to come. 

The Dark End version is another beast entirely, switching the vibe to something a little malevolent- a techier workout that maintains the essential core of the original but provides a little extra drive to the groove - tough, body-moving Tech House for the heads. 

Maze also showcases the class we have come to expect form Poker Flat. Diamond hard beats, unhinged synths and an evolving groove are classic Niggemann traits, resulting in a deeply assured track that will see as much club play as the other two bombs on this releases.

SQL is known for his warm yet energetic productions and live sets throughout the globe. This new EP is an absolutely rock solid four tracker with everything from happy summer warmth to smooth techno.

First up is Surrender. This could be one of the happiest, sunniest yet powerful tracks you’ll hear this summer! The chords, which open up beautifully in the break, are so optimistic and warm they could be prescribed as an anti-depressant. The groove on the other hand driven by über funky snares, claps and rattling high hats will make you want to take that new found optimism and pretend like Monday doesn’t exist!
 
‘Collect’ is a hypnotic groover with lots of energy and funk. With ever changing and evolving ambient noises in the background and a punishing chord bleep, this track has an almost sinister feel to it. As though you might be punished if you don’t rip up the floor.

‘Reveal’ is best used to end a warm summer day on an outside dance floor with your eyes closed. Grooving to the spacey synths and driving percussion. Be sure to have this one handy when the sun sets! Kassey Voorn rocks the EP with a more pumping approach with his remix focussing on a phat kick and bass line but with a melodic breakdown to catch your breath.

Canada’s My Favorite Robot Records is proud to present one of the most complete artistic statements yet
from the excellent Fairmont, following on from his well-received and unique full length, Automaton in 2012.
Since that stunning third album the label has also released a selection of heavyweight remixes, calling on
producers like Ewan Pearson, Ryan Crosson and Arthur Oskan. Now, continuing in that fine form,
Fairmont serves up his Lie To Me EP, a full five tracks of the sort of moody and indie leaning house that
he perfects like no other.
‘The Biggest Eyes in the World’ feels like a properly structured song the way it unfolds. There’s plenty of
sadness in the various synths from thin ones up top to slower, thicker ones down below. Beats tumble
along underneath it all with barely enough energy to keep going and it makes for delightfully sombre
listening.
‘Boa’ is more upbeat but still there is plenty of pain in the shiny synths than run right through the track. A
light dusting of percussion complements rubbery kick drums but the real focus is on the unfolding
analogue patterns that stretch from beginning to end. Next is ‘Lie To Me’, a reservedly uplifting cut with
acid style squelches, water droplet hooks and more tortured sounding synths, a bit like a sleepy Kraftwerk
on a serious downer.
‘Emoticon’ is slowed to a near crawl and the synths here are heavy with a Detroit style machine soul as
purposeful kicks rotate heavily below. Fairmont gets plenty of feeling out of his music making tools, as well
as plenty of texture – some are bubbly, some are sheet metal, but all are expertly designed.
Closing out this introspective journey into sound is ‘Abysm’, which is a deep and almost hymnal cut that
features plenty of droning and groaning synths and occult hooks, FX and moods. A glowing vocal harmony
lights up the whole thing with a human glow but still Fairmont places most of his faith in machines.
This is an exceptional outing from Fairmont that should help take him to the next level of success that his
production skills clearly warrant.
