ESSEX RASCALS PODJAM 023: BEN SIMS presents BACK TO THE ROOTS (VOL ONE)

Plex is a club night that has sought to be the answer to London’s calling for deep, off kilter techno for almost ten years now. Co conducted by Luke Handsfree, James Tec and Skunkrock, the party, launched in 2006, has since proved its capacity to host some of the city’s most credible, underground events bringing Al Tourettes, Dopplereffekt, A Made Up Sound and more to their South London home, Corsica Studios. Plex’s motive, according to Luke and James, is to expose London to the kind of sound they feel are truly waving the flag for the techno template - an aesthetic that’s always been close to our hearts, which is probably one of the reasons why we've invited them down to pilot Room Three this weekend...

Partial to a mix now and again, one third of the team behind Plex, Luke Handsfree, has kindly pulled together a feast of selections that best represent what's in store when the crew join special guests, AnD, Killawatt and Metrist in the booth this Friday night.

With an album on the way for Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe label, it’d be only right that a lot of people start paying due attention to the rather enigmatic Mancunian duo, AnD. But in all truth, Andro and Dimit have been pushing their own bombastic fusion of techno for the last five years already. Releases on labels like Idle Hands, Hidden Hawaii and Horizontal Ground may have revealed and revelled in the pair’s obsession with the shadow cloaked outskirts of techno but the material for their debut LP, Cosmic Microwave Background, draws on a whole lot more than their love of the form, as we found out in this interview, conducted ahead of their headline set in the Plex hosted Room Three this Friday night that's presented alongside this sterling 35 minute mixtape.

Thumpin' Thursday 28th May

Originally released in 2005 "A mix of everything you thought you heard".  There is a piece from every release I ever put out from 1992 to 2002 in this mix from a UCLA art student cd release, an underground rap compilation cassette,  J5, Ozomatli, mix cds with Shadow, remixes, etc...its all in there. I encourage folks to identify any piece you can.. Ill help with the hard ones.
