Sweet Dreams

The middle one’s in the kitchen stirring flowers in hot water to make secret magic potions.
The radio, it’s buzzing low, they’re talking about high crimes and plastics floating in the ocean.
The youngest’s baking bread.
The eldest’s still in bed.
And the dog’s just barking.

And you step out the shower. Hair towelled up. Bead of water drips from nose to lip.
To the mirror you saunter slow,
oh those soft soles and toes and that lilting in your hips,
You turn your face into the light
You put that shadow on your eyes
And that mascara

And me, I’m sitting in the garden. Strumming chords for songs that no-one wants to know..
I’m thinking bout the greats.  And the not-so-greats.  And the somewhere in-betweens. And I’m thinking about…… Bono

And why’s a grown man in his early forties thinking about Bono you might ask and sure that’s a pretty good question
I saw him on the TV recently.  And it was clear to me, we have the very same obsession

He hears Nina, He hears Bob
In their voice the word of God,
He wants to be like them

And me, I’m trying to be like them too. But I guess it’s true he’s a little further down the street.
Not too much though. This Bono knows. There’s a long way to go before he matches Astral Weeks.

Or Django Rheinhards gypsy sound,
or the early Velvet Underground,
Oh lord we’re both really striving,

And in my weaker moments, I worry nothing I make will mean anything to anybody no.
And behind those tinted glasses, I see that very same fear right here in the eyes of Bono.

And it makes me just want to take him around the shoulder and hug him and say:

When we’re sitting there at the pearly gate
with all the greats and no difference between us
And what a way it was to spend a life anyway..

I snap myself out my dream. I check my watch. It’s lunchtime and my tummy’s rumbling.
Pat the youngest on the head. Butter up a slice of her fresh bread, then back to working.
This line’s staying in.  Put this one in the bin. Then write another.

I’ll chisel at the melody so its pure and clean and strong and simple,
The words I’ll choose to light the mood, they’ll be crystal clear and true and nimble,

All sonorous of sound,
All delicious in the mouth,
And all full of longing

And maybe, one day, who’s to say, a masterpiece from my heart will flow?
The joy is in the trying they say.

Thinkin bout Bono

Don't recall very much
of how the dream started off
a light shining in my eyes
and a cry and a cough
and a fire in the distance
gently crackling and a warmth given off

There were aunties, there were handbags,
there were squeals, there were shrieks,

But it was a long dream...

Until that bad news from that doctor, shook me like a thundering gong.

But the very worst things can surprise us.

That time I blackened some guy’s eye

That time I watched her breathe her last breath peaceful in that 4 o'clock sunshine

Tedious Monotony

I’m sitting on a train, from my sea-side town,
On a freezing cold morning, with the sleet swirling round,
Another monotonous day I’m now facing.

I’m looking around at familiar faces,
Buried in their phones, Tony betting on the races,
Drawing close to London and the train is getting packed.

They’re squeezing down the aisles, it’s getting difficult breathing,
Open that window or I’m suffocating,
Been commuting 10 years, how much more can I take?

So I let myself dream - to escape this tedium,
To a tropical beach, thousands of miles out of reach,
As I relax in the warm breeze - pina colada if you would please,
Pineapple, coconut dream and lashings of ice, my secret vice.

Reality beckons at Victoria station,
An army of ants, the backbone of the nation,
Heading for the underground, so catch you later.

Squashed into a carriage, touch-tight degradation,
Feeling kind of faint so before the next station,
Hope I don’t need a defibrillator.

Work is such a drag, that it makes me feel mad,
Screens make me hazy, I’m going fuzzy-eyed,
Lunching in Green Park, in order to survive.

So I let myself dream - to escape this tedium,
To a tropical beach, thousands of miles out of reach,
As I relax in the warm breeze - pina colada if you would please,
Pineapple, coconut dream and lashings of ice, my secret vice.

Heading back home, it doesn’t feel so bad,
Relaxed, seaside bound, no longer feel sad,
Golf links looming, such pleasant scenery.

So I let myself dream - to escape this tedium,
Until tomorrow morning when it all begins again,
Maybe I need some virtual reality,
Something to escape this tedious monotony,
