Written when I had just turned 15 (1982). I had forgotten about it but someone found a tape of me singing it back then. I then purchased a  MacBook in 2020 and decided to record it as a learning exercise/demofor using GarageBand. Naive and simple, but an innocent song for challenging times.

John the fisherman 

They call me John the fisherman 
And I can be seen every day
Working and risking my life as a fisherman 
Sailing out on the waves

I live in a cottage on a cliff, 
I never move far from the sea
I live on fish and homegrown peas
And sleep with a bible close to me

The only things I respect in my world
Are god and the sea 
For they both have claimed the lives of many who meant so much to me
(I say) I never fall in love any more
I’ve been hurt too many times
 (I tell them) I know all loves pitfalls 
I’ll leave that game to the fools!

They say that I’m so hard to please
I disagree with war and many policies 
And dislike people who criticise me

All my friends and family have long since gone
And I’m left with memories 
Some say I’m mad because I talk to myself

Here's a demo track called "Mystic" that was initially going to be on an album I was working on but decided not to use it.
I tracked rhythm using my Ibanez 8 string guitar and used my Schecter Custom for guitar leads and solos.

I have always been a huge fan of Vangelis and this was one of the very first tracks i heard from him. I learn so very much about making music and how a simple simple melody can when used creatively be quite epic in nature.

++++. PROFILE NOTES ++++

Once a wannabe, not yet a has been.

It had been over a decade since I put together a song,
and for that matter basically walked away from music altogether.
Losing hope that I would ever have the time to put into music again,
I finally gave away my 3rd music studio.
I ran across SoundCloud around 2013,
and thought I might take what few songs I had recorded, 
and lay them to rest there.
And there they languished.

HOWEVER, around 2017 I went back to SoundCloud
and began listening a little more and a little more,
and actively taking a part in visiting the sites
of so many wonderful musicians and beautiful songs.
Also, more and more often I would discover that these artists
were blossoming everywhere around the world,
and most definitely worthy of high praise and compliments.

Then suddenly, these old dead soundtracks right here
began to have a bit of life breathed back into them.
From the kind words that began to come trickling in,
I thought, maybe, someday I might give this music thing a try again.

The thing that finally pushed me into action
was a particular SoundCloud artist…Sander Heerings,

Not only was he encouraging,
but he began faithfully responding to a few questions,
then a barrage of them.

The final result seemed to be that after a couple of months,
the Old Grinder now has a 4th studio and, finally, a new song.
I hope there may be many more to come.

Thank you Sander, and to the multitude that have dropped in
to listen to these old songs, 
and most of all, for perking up my spirits.
