Early missions to Mars looked for sites to establish colonies.  Because of the lack of atmosphere, caves were searched in order to find places for underground bases that would protect humans from the sun.  While searching a large complex of caves on Mars, a team of Astronauts discover primitive algae and moss growing inside.  As they go further into the cavern, small strange insects are noticed.  Already overwhelmed by the discovery of life on Mars, the team finally discovers an alcove near the back of a large cavern that is covered in bones.  The bones are human-like primates.  This discovery will later be analyzed by scientist on Earth and realized to be the 'missing link' that archaeologists could not find on Earth.

Chapter 2:  Dawn of the Drones

Drones were developed by the military for surveillance and as missile lauchers, and were then adopted for use by police agencies, search and rescue teams, border patrol and private security.  It was not long before film makers used drones for aerial photography, farmers and ranchers used drones to monitor their crops and animals, retail companies delivered products and even pizzas, and hobbyists bought them for the shear novelty of them.  Reporters used drones to cover everything from sporting events to traffic, keeping them safe in war zones, while paparazzi used drones to stalk the famous on a whole new level.  Drones were used to inspect oil rigs and oil pipelines, deliver medical supplies to remote areas, give virtual tours of real estate and deliver parts that were urgently needed in many industries. Scientists put drones to use monitoring wildlife, studying the ozone, and the effects of everything from global warming to pollution.  Drones were a godsend in many ways and seemed too good to be true.  

This was the beginning.  Everything seemed to be going well as technology marched forward.  However it seems inevitable that any technology will eventually be misused.  It can range from the small intrusive abuses of overly large corporations to the invasive assertion of power by governments, or from the purely criminal to overtly terrorist acts.  Criminals soon resorted to smuggling drugs with drones, by air and sea, and using drones for assassinations and ‘fly by’ shootings, and the terrorists transformed commercially available drones in to weapons of terror.  It all led to a greater need for more drones.  They needed drones to defend against drones, always bigger, better, and smarter.    

In the 23rd century it is hard for us to understand how people did not realize what would happen.  It seems so clear to us now that the chaos of man, with all the diverse cultures struggling against each other, would only be magnified through the lens of advanced robotic technology.  War on a massive scale was unavoidable...

Dawn Of The Drones

Groundbreaking news: The spacecraft Genesis begins it’s journey.  

After a thousand years of human space travel, human spacecraft are still not able to break the speed of light.  Spacecraft with Alcubierre Drives are in the early stages of development, and tests to produce warp bubbles are showing promising initial results.  
There are many concerned that with the current population growth, the inhabitable areas of the solar system will be overwhelmed with demand for resources within the next hundred years.  That would make the development of faster than light space craft a necessity for the long-term survival of the human species.  

Humans have colonized the solar system and are currently exploiting all of the resources of the planets, moons, and asteroids within the solar system, and drone craft are already mining the Oort cloud.  However many scientist predict that the rate of drone craft manufacturing along with the time involved to travel the extreme distances to the Oort cloud may mean that resources will not arrive in time to match the rapidly expanding rate of human population growth.  

Probes sent to Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri, and Tau Ceti in search of habitable planets that might already contain life and resources required for human life.  It will take decades to determine if there is a realistically viable planet, and that information may come too late to prevent a large-scale catastrophe that could result in the first Solar War.  

Fears of such a catastrophe and the resulting new Dark Age has lead to the development of the Eden Project.  Initially begun by a consortium of religious organizations and space technology corporations, the Eden Project was based on information gained from the rapidly advancing knowledge of the galaxy gained from telescopes built at the edges of our solar system and telescopic probes sent outside the solar system.  A perfect planet was discovered in the center of the Milky Way that scientist believe might have been the first planet in the Milky Way with earth-like life, prompting many in the religious community and over 50% of the population of the solar system to accept this planet as the probable location of the source of human life:  Eden.  

The Eden Project has completed the first Generational Ship  that is capable of travelling to the center of the Milky Way.  The ship, which is appropriately named Genesis, is actually a completely self-contained space station powered by nuclear reactors and solar arrays, and has a small fleet of hybrid solar sail and nuclear powered ships capable of landing on and departing from Earth-sized planets.  The crew of the ship is composed of 500 people, some of whom will be maintained in suspended animation for most of the journey.  There is also a DNA bank on board that will house enough human DNA to provide an diverse population to colonize the planet Eden.  In addition, the official numbers of domestic animals on board are nearly double that of the human population, and is supported by DNA banks to provide the resources for expanding the domestic animal population on Eden, and the deep space craft houses an extensive seed bank to provide a vast array of plant life to supplement what many people believe to be a well-established biosphere.  

At a distance of 25,000 light years away, there are many critics of the program that propose humans will develop new technologies at a rate that will create spacecraft that can overtake the Genesis before it reaches Eden.  The leadership of the Eden Project believes that there is no good reason to wait for uncertain technological advances when it is possible to make the journey now. Proponents of the Eden Project view it as the ultimate pilgrimage, and the followers of the Return to Eden movement believe that they will all gain a place in heaven for their efforts to return humans to God’s Garden of Eden.  

The ship has left the solar system and has a small fleet of drone craft clearing a pathway through the Oort Cloud to ensure a safe departure from the gravity of our Sun.  Our wish for these 31st century pilgrims:  Godspeed.

Triumphant Return

"I remember that day clearly.  We heard the distant drums keeping pace as the warriors marched, and we knew in a instant that they had returned.  Every man, woman and child dropped what they were doing and gathered at the edge of town.  The beating of the drums grew louder, and as they rounded the hills we could hear the warriors burst into song.

"We are here!
We are home!"

Never since have I felt such power and elation from so few words.  The townsfolk cheered and waved with such emotion that they could scarcely contain themselves, and the children were so overpowered by their emotions that they ran out of town to meet the victorious warriors half way.  Like a wave of barbarian warriors attacking our brave men, the boys leaped into the arms of their fathers.  It took nearly half an hour for the men to appease the joyful throng of children and to herd the joyful mob out of the field and finally enter the city.  The warriors had returned triumphant.  

Once inside the city walls the army was surrounded by their families and friends, and all around I could see not a single dry eye.   Everyone feared that they would never see our warriors again, so when certain disaster had turned into such overwhelming success the tears of sorrow that could have been were, on this day, nothing compared to the tears of joy and exuberance."

Triumphant Return

On the third day of battle, the reinforcements finally arrived.  For two days the men fought bitterly to repel the invaders.  The losses were too great and there were many dead who were stacked in piles for lack of place to bury them.  The wounded moaned in a constant and inescapable drone that felt like drowning men dragging us to the depths of despair.  And there was a heavy pall of smoke that lay about our small castle like a blanket of gloom that covered the men's spirits.   While the enemy had withdrawn back to their camp beside the river, our reinforcements arrived like a ray of sunshine piercing through a foggy day and brought rousing cheers from the men as they poured in through the gate.  By the cheers, one would have thought the battle over and victory ours.  This was the effect of the reinforcements upon our spirits that day.   The battle was not over, but our defeated hearts were raised up in renewed enthusiasm for what must assuredly be a certain victory.

Reflections

The air was thick with the fog of the morning and the palpable dread of our soldiers as we began to see the formations of the enemy in the dawn’s early light.  The fog gave way to rain and then it began.  The relentless pounding of the trebuchet crashed into the castle walls with a fiery anger that made physical the hateful bloodlust of the screams of our enemy.  Each wall-shaking explosion was echoed by the thunderous yells of the enemy who would soon descend upon us in a stormy wave of murderous hatred.

My main influences range from Electronic Music (Jarre, Vangelis, and Tangerine Dream) to Rock, Pop, and Orchestral (Classical and Soundtracks), but also include an occasional bit of Hip Hop, EDM and Dubstep.   I have not tried to imitate any of these artists.  I am experimenting in various genres to find what I like most about each one and see what I can learn from them to add to my personal style.   'Slam-Cut' is a film term for quick jump cuts without much set up.  This is analogous to the variety of genres and themes you might encounter here on my SC page.   I hope you enjoy listening.
