DJ, producer and recording artist David Agrella is an artist with a growing reputation as a versatile selector. Showcasing his musical inspirations across genres via his ‘Agrellomatica’ slot on London radio station Bloop, the first release on his recently launched eponymous imprint gained support from artists including Moxie, Korea Town Acid, and Jane Fitz alongside high praise from the likes of Ransom Note, Vinyl Factory and Bolting Bits. Up next, he returns to welcome a fresh set of material for the label’s second release, ‘Robot Romance’. ‘Electric Nostalgia’ is an utterly addictive track that draws you in right from the start as swirling synths and subby pads float above crisp breaks. ‘Robot Romance’ slowly intensifies with fluttering chords that feel weightless as the even kick drums meet an elastic bassline, providing a propulsive gem. Agrella’s Transition Mix of ‘Fallin’ which closes the EP with pummeling drums and muscular acidic melodies, which are integral to the peak-time feel of the track.

Dylan Dylan gets things started with a slice of deep, UKG style beats, Marc Brauner & Jimbo Mack collaborate and make a continuation of the UKg vibe with a German flavour, followed by Foreach with a serious dose of uplifting breakbeat business. Togethrs produces some sublime drum & bass sounds, and Minor Sine Project brings us vibey, acid breaks. Jordan Raymond supplies some atmospheric, laid back rhythms, followed by Nørus & DJ WHIPR SNIPR who drop a powerful chunk of bassline orientated material. Classic Me has been producing off the radar for over a decade, and it’s with pride that LAN gives the German artist a spotlight for the first time.


‘Cycles’ is an eleven track exploration into the ways classical, house music and its adjacent genres play off one another. Unsurprisingly for an artist with experience playing the violin, the album leads both in tracklist and concept with cinematic strings, which then soar into groovy basslines and slouchy kicks.


Classic Me’s confidence in production is levelled by spontaneity in the recording process (sometimes casually recording from a tablet on the go). Mastered in Paris by engineer Marine Benabou, the result is an interesting balance between play and perfection: though many of the tracks hint at J Dilla or Moodyman with their suggestions of tape loops and sampling, the orchestration uses hyperreal acoustics to bring echoes of Daft Punk, millennial Chemical Brothers and French touch back into the mix. 


It’s this tying together of classical influences with dance music’s more classic elements - hip-hop melodies, deep house vocals, funk basslines and the brightness of disco - which make up the unique sound of Classic Me. Each track turns a different face of the prism toward the listener, weaving an album that is cinematic and wistful without losing sight of its groove.
