For the twenty-fourth Moonlight Mixtape, we’re wishing a happy birthday to Resident Pinkowitz, who’s celebrating the occasion with a cinematic journey through his original productions. He’s had an incredible year, with 2023 bringing releases on organic house mainstays @amulangamusic, @3rdavenuelabel, @thepurrmusic, @daydreamers_soundavenue, @beadultmusic, and @anokamusiclabel. This week’s mix includes some of his favorite 2023 releases (we’re looking at you, “Cabernet Sky” EP), some brand-new tunes (“Growth in the Dark”), and a few unreleased delights. Pinkowitz sets the scene with an ethereal opening that evokes a sense of calm and contemplation before layering heat and rhythm into a masterful build and an emotive, high-energy finish. Moonlight Mixtapes 024 - by Pinkowitz

We’re wishing you well during this Yuletide season with a Moonlight Mixtape straight from the land of fire and ice. Hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland, Leon S. Kemp is a DJ, producer, and co-founder of organic house mainstay @nordicvoyage recordings.

When we asked him about holiday celebrations unique to his corner of the North, Kemp descrbed Þorrablót, a midwinter feast that showcases a variety of traditional food preservation methods crucial for survival through dark and isolated North Atlantic winters. Þorrablót is a celebration that highlights the Icelandic tradition of resilience in order to manifest joy and connection even in the darkest time of year. Kemp invokes light into his own musical practice—or, as he says, he uses music “as a conduit to transcend darkness and usher in brightness and positivity.”

Kemp opens the hour with a soft static whirlwind that recalls billowing snow before illuminating us with an infusion of world influences and global rhythms. He layers melodic techno, hints of nineties-era electronica, and deep Latin house over an organic-Afro groove as he dances between the darkness and the daylight. This mix - the heat, the mood, and the atmosphere - reflects the complex and shifting terrain of Iceland almost as well as it parallels the diversity of ways in which we, as listeners around the world, celebrate our own new beginnings. 

And so, whether you’re waking to snowfall or (for our Southern Hemisphere friends) set for a scorcher today, this mix will keep you in the mood all day long. Cheers!

Molac is a definite presence in the world’s organic house scene. A native of Ecuador, his releases on Renaissance, Songuara, Amulanga, and Melody of the Soul are only a fraction of a production career that’s universal in character. Universal is, coincidentally, the feel of this twenty-sixth Moonlight Mixtape, infused with sensations of falling and dreaming, and driven by a peak time through-line of organic rhythms that Molac layers with dark progressive, deep house, tech, and ritual sounds. After opening with patterns of dreamy guitar coupled with ethereal shades of synth, Molac leads the listener on a mind-bending journey through the deeper shades of danceable melody. Infused with a bottom-end so resonant that you’ll feel bass in your chest even through your headphones, the tenor of this mix stirs the senses like delicate breath on the back of your neck—the kind of impulse that flows like fire through the tips of your fingers, leaving you reaching for the play button again and again.

We expected something uncommon from Andy Immerman for our twenty-seventh Moonlight Mixtape—after all, this is a man whose career is built upon an impressive creative range. Immerman’s dreamy tracks grace his own label, along with @graderamusicofficial, @1ststrikedeep, and @newsomethingrecords. He’s the founder of @splitsecondpresents, he’s a performer who has opened for @realblackcoffee, @tychomusic, and @deserthearts, and he’s even scored an engineer credit on Bon Iver’s double-Grammy-winning self-titled 2012 album.

This week, Immerman hands us a cleverly-crafted composition of soundscapes full of deep and danceable cuts, including some of his own— 2022’s “Upstream,” last month’s remix of @shaedistrict’s “Grid Lines,” and even a few fresh IDs. Leading with a high-energy blend of funky bass lines and underscoring them with club-friendly energy, Immerman infuses organic flavor into the mix with heaping helpings of live sounds and classic synths. Drums, saxophone, piano, and guitar set a dynamic tone for a mix that samples courses of breaks, techno, funk, jazz, and even some groovy, early-millennial electronic lounge. Words can’t do this one justice—it’s the kind set you’ll need to hear to believe. Gritty at times and graceful in others, this one’s a wicked work of art.

He’s on a hot streak of shows lately: he played direct support for @wassumusic last week, and coming up, he’ll be opening for @camelphatmusic and @jorisvoorn on March 2. But Discognition is all about producing powerful deep and progressive tunes that range from the organic vibes to the heavy hitting club shakers, including last week’s haunting heater “Lost to Time” on @clubhausrecords and the beautiful “All of Me,” which capped 2023 for @enormouschills.

This week’s Moonlight Mixtape—our thirtieth, if you’re counting—comes to us from U/ME, a US-based deep, organic, and progressive selector who’s known for residencies with @blooplondon and @saturosounds along with his excellent Sunday Service, a four-hour expansive exploration of healing house sounds. This week, he’s delivered us an expertly assembled hour of dynamic range and high-energy flavor that’s inspired by moonlight, yet primed for warmer weather. Leading off with airy optimism and a bit of saxophone that’s reminiscent of 80’s Miami vibes, U/ME leads us through shades of contemplation brushed by a little melancholy before diving into a deep, progressive flow. A well-crafted trajectory of tracks packed with unique synth work gives the hour a cosmopolitan vibe that’s rounded out by haunting vocal samples and eclectic percussion. Moonlight Mixtapes 030 - by U/ME

It’s another Monday, and today the German-Irish duo @lenzmusikofficial are right on time with the thirty-first installment of Moonlight Mixtapes. Since joining forces during the pandemic era, Hamburg/Belfast-based DJ Joma and German vocalist and songwriter Moon Aton have crafted a capable resume, including a string of successful releases on labels we love—such as @beadultmusic, @wheretheshadowends, @equilibrio_records, and @nordicvoyage—along with expanding the sound of the scene with their weekly ‘Night Whisper’ podcast.

This week, they open with a dreamy Radiohead remake by Stereo Underground before charting a path on the smooth and heady side of things. Deep tweaks to traditional instrument sounds and a knack for creating emotional depth keep this seamlessly-crafted sonic tapestry intriguing from start to finish. The track selection feels tailored to beautiful organic synth work, including tracks from the likes of @elliot_moriarty, @leavinglaurel, and our own Residents @cielo_us and @pinkowitz.

As the mood evolves, so does the energy. In the second half, Lenz brings us a spirited, club-ready vibe complete with funk-driven bass lines layered under early-aughts progressive and ‘80s electro nostalgia. A wistful vocal finish ties up an 80-minute journey through all the moods a mind can offer—this one’s versatile enough to cover all the bases.

Moonlight Mixtapes 031 - by Lenz (DE)

If you’re anything like us, your life comes with a soundtrack that’s shaped through musical memories. Some melodic moments are cerebral, while others are more corporeal. But either way, pressing play has a tendency to transport you right back to the state of mind where you were when you left them. The latest Moonlight Mixtape is a compendium of that brand of sonic spell-casting, and behind the curtain, The Duchess holds court. As the founder of Coven Collective—Denver’s fastest-growing all-female DJ collective—she’s a leader in Denver’s dance music landscape. And as a literal scholar of sound and the founder of frequency-bending Resonant Medicine, this week she has us truly bewitched.

Vocals are the star of her ascent to apogee, including a breathtaking opening of mournful melancholia that centered us with our mood and our movement from the get-go. The Duchess’s selections simmer slowly—the first half of the mix is a build that’s a little more deliberate than demanding. But the interplay of delicate flamenco riffs and call-and-response canticles incites a fired-up and primal feeling that’s underscored by a ravenous progressive rhythm. 

The summit of this set is a show of skill, as she weaves shades of electro, tech house, Afro, and soul between expansive breakdowns and deep, heavy drops. The hour’s electric second half is constructed on a dance between reaction and recollection—sparkling synths over dynamic darkness are a contrast that calls up echoes of early Royksopp, and the finishing touches are built from the rise and re-emergence of eclectic, ecstatic voices.

This week, he’s brought us a mix that’s perfect for sunset soirées, whether you’re keeping it casual with a backyard barbecue or enjoying an elegant poolside cocktail.

This past weekend was full of spectacular atmosphere, courtesy of an uncommonly powerful aurora borealis display, so it’s only fitting that this week’s episode of Moonlight Mixtapes contains some celestial atmosphere of its own—straight from the studio of Ilias Katelanos. 

An organic house mastermind, he’s built a resume from unforgettable tracks on standout labels such as Where the Shadow Ends, Telematique, Melody of the Soul, Flug Lab, and Songuara. This week, he’s centered both moonlight and melody as he takes us through an hour-long celebration of high vibration.

Katelanos begins the mix on an elevated note, layering shades of funk and soulful vocal samples atop a solidly organic beat that goes the distance. Watch out for a decidedly deeper turn at the halfway point, where the gritty bottom end and traces of hypnotic vocals recall those late night witching hours. For this week’s thirty-seventh Moonlight Mixtape, he’s packed a plethora of originals and aural nostalgia into a mix that—at exactly one hour long—definitely understands the assignment.

The vibrant opening track—his own “The Partét (Acoustic Version)”— feels like peering beyond the confines of daily life into a hidden consciousness that’s rich with rhythm and texture. A number of bootlegs recall a host of melodic memories, from JD Davis’ classic “The World Is Mine” vocals, to an organic rework of A-Ha’s “Take On Me.” Last week’s gorgeous Erdi Imrak collaboration “Runaway” (Songuara) is a highlight of the mix, and an hour that infuses progressive, electro, and vintage vibes ties up on an ambient note with Losev’s rework of A.M.R.’s “Sailor’s Cry.”

We’ve got the Founding Fathers on the brain ahead of the upcoming national holiday. So, this week, we’ve gotten into the swing of sparkler season by hosting one of our founding Residents - Cielo (US) - for our thirty-eighth Moonlight Mixtape. 

Cielo’s a tastemaker whose signings find homes at labels like Empty World, Keyfound, Amulanga, and Be Adult. He’s not one to cling to convention, and his recent work represents an interplay between classic organic rhythms (always with that booming bottom end) and avant-garde finesse fused with art-rock aesthetics.

But don’t take our word for it. The first track’s airy, breezy opening gives way to a club-worthy electro-funk groove that includes touches of jazz piano, plenty of originals and remixes, hypnotic vocals, and vintage disco-style synths. This one’s full of surprises—it’s a work of wonder that calls up all the world’s flavors for a musical ride with a universal vibe. We’re returning from a long holiday weekend by turning back to our roots with Elliot Moriarty, who delivers a thirty-ninth Moonlight Mixtape that’s a heady hour of lush organic house landscapes perfect for getting in touch with your creative flow.

Hailing from the UK and busy pushing boundaries with his sound and style in clubs around the world, Moriarty’s talent for the craft haas earned him releases on labels like When We Dip, The Soundgarden, Songuara, and Where The Shadow Ends, to name a few. This week, he starts out deep and dark, with shadows of the ethereal and the melancholy woven between pounding kicks and booming bass lines. His track list is stacked with dynamic energy, matching his reputation as an adept selector. Look out for a stunning cinematic buildup that breaks into elation before diving into a smooth melodic groove that’s made for movement.

Shae District’s had quite the summer, and for our fortieth Moonlight Mixtape this dance-pop duo has put together something tailor-made for crowds and home listeners alike.

Also known as Debjit Das and Andrew Parpart, @shaedistrict—based right here in Denver—are known for blending the deep and the dreamy to create music that’s full of emotion, yet made for movement. This year, they’ve released an eponymous album, and a spate of remixes by artists such as Resident @pinkowitzmusic and friends of the family @aimmerman and @flyn_music.

But Shae District also specializes in spectacle, as we learned during their stunning in-the-round set at @zodiachause this spring and their Electric Forest set last month. So it’s no surprise that this mix provokes the imagination, what with its mix of originals and new classics that somehow runs the gamut between organic, progressive, trance, and indie pop. Memories and ideas are manifold, here.

So whether you’ve been with us for the long haul or are just tuning into Moonlight Mixtapes, this one’s got something for everyone. As the founders of Dialtone Records, Noble Spirits have explored over two decades of creative curation within the electronic music industry together. Aside from Dialtone (and its downtempo-influenced sister label, Dialtone Tales), these gentlemen have released music on labels like Baikal Nomads, Keyfound, The Purr, and Nordic Voyage, and they don’t shy away from exploring both the emotional and energetic sides of the production process.

This week, they take us back to classic Moonlight Mixtape flavors packed with rich, organic sounds and deep, melodic vibes from start to finish.
