German electro producer Martin Matiske has recently breathed new life into his Blackploid alias. The project’s revival continues to bear fruit with the Strange Stars EP, Matiske’s third Blackploid release of 2021 and second for Central Processing Unit after issuing March’s Cosmic Traveler EP through the Sheffield label.
Blackploid’s two CPU drops have more in common than just stargazing titles. Those who enjoyed Cosmic Traveler will find plenty to like again in these four tracks, with Matiske serving up another quartet of snappy machine-funk joints this time around. However, while there is certainly a throughline between Cosmic Traveler and Strange Stars, this EP also finds Blackploid pushing the envelope at points by taking risks with his synth tones which thrill and enliven the record.
In keeping with the cosmic theme of Blackploid’s recent output, Strange Stars kicks off with ‘Star Patrol’. While this opening cut is full of the same needle-gun basslines and dinky synths that characterised Cosmic Traveler, the drum programming eschews the broken beats favoured by many in the scene for a straight house/techno snap. It makes for a very groovy jam, one with Drexciya, Computer World-era Kraftwerk and a pinch of Space Dimension Controller in its mix.
Indeed, the only track on Strange Stars which skips along on a broken beat is second entry ‘The Signal’. ‘The Signal’ also features some of Blackploid’s most impressive electronics programming to date, announcing itself with a brilliantly unusual synth that sounds like an old video game unit which has just gained sentience. When this alien tone is combined with another precision-engineered bassline the track invokes the grizzly bangers of the L.I.E.S. label, though the keyboard stabs which enter periodically also hint to the funkier electro of, say, Egyptian Lover.
‘The Unseen’, the first B-side of Strange Stars, finds Blackploid bringing together many of the things which made the two previous tunes such standouts. A steady four-on-the-floor and a slightly haunted feel to the synth choices casts back to ‘Star Patrol’, but much like ‘The Signal’ this joint also features some rather weird tones which are a hair’s breadth away from machine malfunction. It’s a feeling which runs through to closing cut ‘Light Corridor’, a number where melodies and anti-melodies zip around an array of gurgling electronic cells.
Martin Matiske’s fine run of Blackploid EPs continues with the intergalactic electro stylings of Strange Stars.

Having a preference for various styles and influencenes from electronic music, Utrecht-based artist Tifra belts out an art:cast that deserves to be called special. With releases on Gestalt Records, Snippets and Rough Recordings Tim, Tifra's real name, can already look back at a delicate discography on respected respectively renowned labels and has made a name of his own in the scene. His art:cast depicts the artist's musical versatility guiding the listener from Balearic vibes to Electro-touched tracks to finally sprinkle some Acid-magic into the (sound) spectrum after. For sure Tifra knows his DJ-craft and blends what belongs together to a coherent approach that outlives the moment as he has latter on his side.

Less than a year after Botanical Illustration takes patience and Skill EP, Giovanni Natalini aka CO-PILOT, comes back on Simona Faraone’s label, New Interplanetary Melodies, with the Green Machine album, which is its natural prosecution: inside it we also find the three tracks previously published by the same label in audio cassette format only (NIM001- MC).
Green Machine is a concept album, which takes up and develops the ecological issues already treated by the artist in his previous work,
namely the increasingly tricky dichotomy between nature and machine and the harmful impact of humans on it.
The A side opens with the already published Botanical Illustration takes patience and Skill (A1), an 8 minutes suite in which the powerful Live drum breaks are perfectly combined with synths and vocal samples, transporting us to the tops of exotic mountains, to
continue with the ecstatic Himawari (A2) that sounds like a “desert session” made on Mount Fuji, for a result of pure musical mysticism
and finally, Mother Love Nature pt.1 (A3), a track that takes us back to more familiar territories, winking at the most experimental British
trip hop of recent memory and Mother Love Nature pt.2 (A4) characterized by a background of modular synths and nature sounds
effects that precede Giovanni’s powerful drums, underlining once again this perfect fusion of organic and synthesized sounds.
Side B opens with the psychedelic choruses of Dancing Like Fela (B1) supported by synthetic arpeggios and a frenetic drumline sounds
like a breakbeat. Continuing along this side, we come to the unsettling use of vocal samples on the beautiful Halo (B2), the ethereal and
danceable art-pop of Lost You - In Translation - (B3) to conclude with the evocative Playing the Zurna in Ulan Bator (B4), a track with
a pressing rhythm and elegant arrangements that once again underlines Giovanni Natalini’s mastery in mixing sounds and suggestions that are apparently far away but that always find the right place.
Green Machine sounds like a valid attempt to finally find a “solid” balance between humans and nature, but it also demonstrates how the continuous mixing of sounds is the most effective way to escape from the homologation that is increasingly widespread in contemporary society.

When referring to Scape One, its obligatory to recognize that his work is wholeheartedly visionary. Ominous bass lines, warped bleeps, and hiccup like high hats combined with perfectly harmonized chords and melodies form a groundbreaking type of electro sound very atypical to the trends. Believe In Records as a division of MixCult Records features second release with an experimental assertion full of retro influences coalesced with the sounds of the future, seemingly responding to one another's frequencies in perfect congruence.

The high demanding collectors cannot miss this release.
