Releasing a new EP on Blueprint last month (October) ‘Nothing Can Be Held In Our Hands For Long’. Steve Bailey aka Makaton, has been releasing seminal, experimental and cutting-edge techno music since 1998 with all but three of his releases coming through his own Rodz-Konez operation, a label that’s also released music by Regis, Inigo Kennedy, Female, The 65D Mavericks and Fumiya Tanaka.

Makaton has also released two records on Token and one on RSB.  His exhilarating live set has also seen him support the techno scene across the UK, Europe and in the US. ’4 Point Suspension’ conveys an immediate punch, with crunching beats and an unremitting delivery, while the fractured ‘Six Feet Under In Love’ stutters and sparkles, before the dark and whirling dimensions of ‘Cold Black Heart’. Underground and uncompromising to the core; recalcitrant.

Stealth is a special compilation selected and mixed by Peter Van Hoesen. The fourteen track album pulls together his own exclusive material along with previously unreleased tracks from his closest musical peers. It comes in the form of three EPs (both on vinyl and digital), a digital download as well as a special mix CD. 

The idea here was for Peter to combine a mix album with an artist album; to marry his own music with the sounds he is influenced by. The cultured likes of Voices from the Lake, Mike Parker, Yves De Mey and Imaginary Softwoods, amongst others, all make the cut. “I believe less and less in the artist as a solo subject, whereby the ego of the artist seems to be the driving force,” he explains of the thinking behind this project. “On the contrary, I think we exist within a multitude of connections, who we are is as much defined by who is around us. Stealth is a little reminder of that.” 

Originally Peter intended to edit and remix the tracks he was sent from friends, but instead he allows them to play out in full as they knit with his own style so perfectly. The Time To Express boss here offers us a perfect window into his current musical world. It is one where there is a keen and streamlined focus on trance inducing percussive patterns (especially on his own contributions) and is where techno takes on a spiritual, otherworldly form that truly consumes your mind. “I really feel that a new chapter is starting in me,” he says. “And this project serves as a subtle announcement of that”.

Stealth - Mixed By Peter Van Hoesen

Maelstrom is a French techno artist with over 15 years of experience. He might only just be putting out his debut album, but he’s long been recognised for his distinctive productions. Early in his career he was signed by The Hacker to his label Zone, as well as the French Bromance imprint. More recently, meanwhile, he’s released on Veronica Vasicka's Cititrax and put out music on the RAAR label he set up alongside Louisahhh. 

As you might imagine for someone with such a history, Maelstrom’s sound regularly sees him crossing the borders between techno and electro. As the mix he’s dropped for us reveals, this is something he’s particularly well versed in. Taking in the likes of DMX Krew and British Murder Boys alongside the more contemporary Sleeparchive and Ancient Methods, Maelstrom demonstrates an adept knowledge spanning the entire length of techno and electro history. With his forthcoming Room Two appearance for his label showcase coming in just two weeks, it’s got us more than prepped for an introduction to RAAR’s sound.

Hong Kong born and raised in Canada, Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first release in 2003. Stuart grew up listening to Toronto’s college radio stations and attended after hours parties playing underground house music. He later worked at Cosmos Records store which dealt vintage Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, House & Hip Hop to crate diggers both local and from abroad. Reflecting his diverse interest in music, Stuart's house & techno productions can swing from lush and soulful to crunchy and jacking . He has released and remixed music on respected labels such as Nonplus+, Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, Créme Organization & New Kanada. Cassy recently included 2 of Stuart’s tracks on her Fabric 71 mix CD for Fabric London. 2013 also marked the inaugural ep release of his own label Lab.our which he started with long time friend Jason Ulrich. In 2015, Stuart released his Sophomore album 'Under The Same Sky' on the respected Dekmantel label.

Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
