Marcel Dettmann is a rarity in electronic music. His precocious disdain for rules has been one of the key ingredients for a decades-spanning arc that started sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall (with early exposure to post-punk, industrial and synth pop) and continues to this day. His leitmotif is instantly recognisable, expertly layered, playfully syncopated, and though his influence is everywhere, no one quite manages to copy his pioneering sound. His formative influences surface frequently, serious atonal arrangements that follow the logic of EBM descending into a flurry of protean melodies; maybe this versatility is why, for a long time now, Dettmann’s sound has been so synonymous with a city in flux. The 10 year celebration continues with a hybrid live recorded set from German dab hand Vril. Much of his work, like the metaphysical and culturally seminal substance from which he took the name, is heavy on duality, hard and gentle, vibrating with machinelike power and shot through with a raw and often tender emotion. It’s a calculation that has yielded some of the most unforgettable sounds of recent times, 2018’s heavy-hitting Anima Mundi or last year’s Animist have lost none of their soul-stirring resonance, and his purist techno reaches far beyond his published work. Live and in flow state, he carries just as strong a charge, a frothing, fulgurant techno that invokes awe and measures in colossal proportions. Leave aside collabs with Rødhåd and Sebastian Mullaert for Circle of Live, though the magic’s there too. It’s an arcane and ghostly sound that burrows into the soul and leaves its mark, and in his scores of fans and 51 toured countries, it has. For Bassiani Podcast 237 the haunting power of his work finds form in 92 minutes of visceral techno that rolls from crystalline form to brooding storm. The sound of a new world dawning just beyond our current horizon.

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.

This year’s highly anticipated ‘Live at Cocoon Ibiza’ mix is helmed by techno legend Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault Systems guise. 

As Planetary Assault Systems, UK titan Luke Slater has constantly laid down a blueprint for the future of techno. As a live performer he is a visionary who fuses mind melting minimalism, catchy cyborg funk and cinematic soundscapes that really take you on a trip. He did that once again back in July as part of Cocoon's 20th anniversary season and now the results are laid down on CD for us to relive the magic. 

Over the course of eighty spellbinding minutes, Slater captivates with evocative sci-fi imagery and high class melodic minimalism, smoothly shifting from moments of high pressure drum-funk intensity to uplifting and spiritual passages of cosmic sound and back again. Along the way, he digs deep into his back catalogue to serve up plenty of golden oldies as well as more contemporary cuts, and the whole thing melts together into a timeless set that explores the outer edges of techno with huge amounts of both style and substance. 

Debuting on Cocoon with a rare appearance outside of Slater’s usual labels Ostgut Ton and his own Mote Evolver, a 12” release drops in unison with the mix including four Planetary Assault Systems productions: on one side both 'RAWW’ and 'RUN' are exclusive studio versions, whilst on the flip are live versions of 'Desert Races' and 'Give It Up' featuring live sax by Tim Ower, offering some of techno's finest moments, while the mix itself is an essential testament to the forward looking nature of not only Cocoon Ibiza, but also Luke Slater himself.

NYCTA is a project Adam X and Function have been pulling together, with many obstacles along the way, over the course of the last 10 years and this mix captures the essence of what they set out to achieve. It pays total homage to the sound and it's a sound that, in a scene where everything has already been largely reissued, hasn't had a light shone on it yet. Nugroove, yes. But this is much more than that. Though not overlooked in the history of electronic music when it comes to the early days of electro, hip hop and disco, New York City has been largely overlooked in it's contributions to the origins of techno and house music in America, while the cities of Detroit & Chicago have always taken most of the credit. Names like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee, Tommy Musto, How & Little, Mundo Muzique, Damon Wild, Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, Ralphie Dee, Jimmy Crash, Rheji Burrell, Bobby Konders, Roger S, Blue Jean, L.B. Bad and of course Adam X were as instrumental in bringing both genres forward as the artists from the aforementioned cities.

Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
