Sometimes you have these dreams in which you’re on that road again. No bumps, lots of sand, and a crisp motor that navigates you to the beginning of time. As the excitement grows, the speed increases - not with memories, but with claps and kicks and snares and then those vocals that hit you hard are like a smooth home run. Well Sometimes is one of those ‘think-about-life’ tunes that rings in your ears long before and after the track ends. Put on those leopard leggings of yours and shift the gears up because you’re in for a treat.

The mountainous road leads you into swirls and twirls as you shift your gears down a bit. You’re nostalgic now, so you light up two cigarettes at a time as Track 39 thumps into your sensitive eardrums. You can hear all the nocturnal animals humming their nightly songs and here you are trying to not turn left or right, but to just go straight ahead. This track encompasses pure focus, with a gloomy aftertaste. Kind of like the iron taste in your mouth after a heavy hangover. But wait, then those juicy synths strike hard as you finally begin to see the light of day again.

You’re getting there, fam. You know you’re on the right road now, so you feel happy about it, but you secretly miss that eccentric, emotional, solipsist experience of the night-ride. No time for that, though. Sometimes I Feel Sad, Sometimes Happy is one hell of a belter. You reset the navigation and are welcomed by the infamous Windows startup tune - absolute classic. Swift shifts towards wavy and aural drops of space. Then those rough snares turn into an ode to Arabic hymns that put you off guard. The fine line between sad and happy emotions almost seem to be at stake now. As the A-side sets out for its final sprint, it’s that intense acid that gives you a boost of energy enabling you to inhale the B-side that has patiently awaited your arrival.

What’s happening to me? We see you wondering. You’re thinking it’s the food you ate or the beers you drank before driving. Or maybe it was that girl you once met. Was it me? Maybe It Was Me sets the tone for the brisk B-side with a sturdy tempo and the recognisable emotion that is so prominent in the duo’s production vibe. The distant howl of this good-looking girl repeat themselves before you dive into another bubbly bath of acid, synths and punchy snares. The liveliness is high on this one and you sense your destination is a known one now.

You can’t act as if none of this was unexpected. This entire journey, this confrontation with the reality that Windows computers might in fact still be ‘the real deal’. You stop at the gas station and buy an apple, just to fully comprehend this insight. You begin to feel good. The room is filled with an orchestra of sounds and is broken down by vocals and lots of open doors. How did it all come this far? Your place of arrival has now been revealed. You’ve driven 90 mph not to visit your friends or family, but to play this record at an unknown club where only the realest is untrue. Don’t act surprised, because let’s be honest, You Could’ve Seen It Coming.

Our first "transnational" label mix recorded half in Berlin and half in London. The first half sees a heartfelt and freeform journey by HM head Zapata followed by just over half an hour of the spaced out, soulful beats of JVXTA. We picked out some of our favourite records from recent parties and also slipped in some of HM's own including an exclusive from our forthcoming fifth record.

Clandestino’s own Nick J. Smith breaks ranks for a solo outing on the label, setting hearts aflutter with three balmy kaleidoscopic cuts. Each track is forged in ideas from the classic dream house era between 1988-’91; evoking the halcyon period’s sense of hope and positivity yet presented in a modern lustre for today’s dance-floors.‘You Make Me Feel’ has tight crisp drums to underpin heavenly keys, woozy pads and choral voice stabs. Breese fleshes out the classic house feels even further with his Frankie Knuckles style emotive piano-led groove. ‘Gets Me High’ takes a deeper path, with its infectious bell melodies and sparkling chords driving the spirit along. Clandestino jack the energy levels with their edgier, acid take. Racing drums set out a moodier atmosphere, the tension swelling and eventually popping as the originals stuttering keys are finally brought in. ‘Can’t Stop’ closes out in a dreamy style; swirling pads and cool organ touches combine with a seductive vocal to trance you out. This is a package that chimes with longer days and warmers nights, as the darkness begins to fade and pastel coloured skies draw near.

Thrilled to present fresh new label Fluid Funk with their debut release by hot signing Beau Zwart. The label offers a platform of choice for creators and lovers of soulful house, hip-hop, jazz, funk, disco et al. The ethos of the label is to bring a community of like-minded people together, away from the complexities that sometimes hamper the course of the label-artist relationship.  Its sister imprint Fluid Electronics is dedicated to all things more muscular and 4x4 oriented, from house to techno via ambient and is about to launch shortly after the former. 

 

First to grace Fluid Funk’s dance floor-ready grooves is Rotterdam-based emerging talent Beau Zwart.  Fresh off a choice inaugural sortie on ‘INI Movements’ that hit the streets a few weeks ago, Beau steps in with his debut 12” ‘Beyond Two Souls’ - an infectiously smooth and solar-powered six-track platter featuring dynamic Dutch duo Fouk on remix duty.

 

Expect lavishly orchestrated cascades of ankle-twisting breaks, prismatic synthwork and summer-flavoured melodies to wrap your ears around as your feet and body give in to the power of that funky bass. Brewing elements of fuzzy pop, pixelated soul and tropicalised rhythms, Beau Zwart’s sound takes us on a wildly enjoyable ride across luxuriantly flowered scapes and fluttering cosmic-house horizons.   Interlaced with sugary Rhodes stabs and 8-bit harmonics a la ‘Floating Points’, Sykes’ warm vox intonations shows us the way into a pulsating heart of wonky, bop-infused boogie.  Expanding to further out-there, club-optimised bravura, Fouk’s take on the title-track is the kind of track that’ll make an impact in the sweatbox!  Pulling out the weirdo harmonics and left-of-centre jazz aerobatics.  ‘Ixodus’ lets its free-spirited sense of playfulness take over completely.  Flip it over and  ‘Marble Book’ unbolts the spacious pads and whirling alien riffs as a sturdy sub bass and gut-churning kicks beat time onto further estranged dimensions. A slightly more muscular but thoroughly sensuous workout, ‘Bustin Out’ fuses classical two-step-indebted breaks with lascivious ‘P-Funk’ tropes into one compelling club heater, before the EP’s sluggish closer ‘Illustrate My Way’ sends us into orbit for good with its slowed-down romanticism and otherworldly piano fantasy.

Germany’s Peter Grummich has been releasing his twist on House and Techno over the past two decades via the likes of Shitkatapult, Kompakt, Spectral Sound, Mule Musiq and of course his very own Innerbird. Here though we see Peter deliver his latest works via Bengoa’s fledgling B2 Recordings, which sees him experimenting with some outboard classics like the classic Casio RZ-1 drum machine and the Roland JX8P synthesizer to create a raw, old school feel.
