Ancestral Soil

Written in May 2015, what started as a poem she wrote to herself during her English exam blossomed into the final song in her EP.  "Lemmings" closes her high school journey on a note full of optimism, revealing Kai's growth and promise to always accept, love, and support herself.  Her song shows hope and pride in who she is and her future endeavors, and marks the start of her new mindset overflowing in positivity, kindness, and peace.

Lemmings (Original) – Kai Mata

Written in April 2015, "Sorrow" is the story of my fear to speak my truth.  The fear of burdening others with my problems seeps into my core, and this song explains my attempt to cope with the unpleasantries of life on my own.

Lyrics:

Lost at sea,
Words are drowned.
She holds her breath and counts to three. 

“Only speak

Her pain unheard.

Written in March 2015, "Scarred" is a song I wrote during a time of hopelessness, distress, and anguish.  It unveils a period where I made myself absolutely powerless and vulnerable to someone, and the consequences that arose from trusting someone undeserving of it.

You opened up my last locked door.
Can’t hide my truth anymore.

I stand in a crowd,
Yet I feel so alone.
I stand scared and scarred and hopeless,
And I wait for you to notice,

But you don’t.
