He never felt more free than being on a dance floor. Arms flailing, feet tapping, hips swaying; it was something that took him out of his body and into another realm. The dance floor could be wherever he wanted it to be, there didn't need to be low lights, a darkened room, or swathes of bodies for him to move, the only necessity was the music - those sweet sonic vibrations were the fuel for his movement. 

Lutruwita-born, Naarm-based producer and DJ Sam Alfred is part of Melbourne's thriving electronic scene. A lover of deep house, jazz-tinged electronics and UK G, Sam feeds these influences into his own music: a nostalgia inducing cocktail of house and techno, which so far has seen him release music for Love Above Records, Spinning Around, Happy Wax and Phenomena Records - the home of his new EP. Speed Racing was written during the pandemic and is the result of Sam experimenting with different sounds and styles which he puts down to the 'pure boredom' that came with being holed up in his bedroom during lockdown.

Joining the prog-parade full steam ahead, the 3 tracker dabbles in tech trance activity with a bonus remix from Berlin’s backbone Mor Elian. The enigmatic newcomer showcasing mature structural bliss, crafted for moments of subconscious synchronicity between the dj and their dancers.

Breaking out of the cookie cutter mold in sharp fashion is the title track, rolling effortlessly with addictive bell delays and morish gating. Layers graciously build a wall of sound that can’t be broken down; splintered shakers flicker above board whilst demonic vocal blurs act as rhythmic counterparts. Mor Elian’s dystopian leaning rendition still holds some stealthily euphoric aura, the heavy handed machine drum freakout a brain scattering rendering on speed.

The B Side stands alone tall and proud; Larp feels like a climax at the party. Sirens flaring high as hell, the rise and fall of the bassline bouncing in tandem with driving drums, only stopping for a dramatic drumroll. An essential to top off a seriously stunning first record from Drua, get it before he blows up!

A blanket of stars littered the sky, it was clearer tonight than ever before. For many darkness brought with it fear but for her it brought peace and relief; she could finally see and hear everything around her. From her window she watched the constellations twinkle and flicker above and was reminded of how small we mere humans really were down here on earth.

We've quickly come to realise how wide the pool of talented Melbourne producers is. Spinning Around, an independent label also based out of the city, is one of the platforms helping to spread word of this further across the pond. For their next release they welcome Prizefight, whose put out a handful of self-released EPs and tracks, lands with a seven-track release that explores driving, reflective trance and techno, backed by three remixes from other Naarm producers: Sam Alfred, Cybernet and STÜM.

From its beginnings as a reissue label, @sprayforever has always been guided by an insatiable appetite for proggy dance music. If excavating long-forgotten gems weren’t enough though, the Irishman behind it all emerged from the fever dream that was lockdown a fully-realised producer/DJ entity. Also taking the name for his alias, Spray comes forth with a typically fractal offering. 

Insistent throb and propulsive, direct drive underpin the A-side. Where ’VT Trad’ opts for nebulous, cosmic detail and shadowy flex, ‘Q3projz’ surfaces a more utopian take on the blueprint. 

‘Zippycher’ then comes flush with wide-eyed radiance; a buoyant, lysergic rite primed for collective physical experience. ‘Slipped’, on the other hand, recalls early ‘90s Art Of Trance while sidestepping revivalist tags. Proper third portal business.

Childhood friends with Iraqi and Maltese lineage, the duo and their legacy building Butter Sessions label have ushered in a new era, sensibility and productivity to the city that raised them.

A defiantly DIY two-man assembly line, Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos have issued a steady stream of diverse records on their own imprint, as well as on like-minded international outposts Incienso, Planet Euphorique and Cocktail d'Amore. Releasing ‘Rebel Force’ in 2019 and ‘Electronic Arts’ in 2023, their albums bind a singular take on mutated house, bush doof, dub techno and downtempo, while their composition and production capacity has also been augmented via 2021’s chamber orchestra collaboration ‘Flashed Glass’ and the rescored film soundtracks for ‘Eraserhead’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

With long-standing DJ residencies and an ever evolving live show fit for both clubs and vast paddocks, the dexterous duo’s alchemy has energised hordes across the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.
