Step 1: This is the 529th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project. The number 529 is what happens when you take the number 23 and multiply it by itself. Consider various interesting aspects of the number 23. For example: Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. It’s the number from the Birthday Paradox (read up!). Also, 529 is an “octagonal number” (read up some more!). The earth’s axis tilts at 23° (rounded down). Anyhow, have fun exploring.

Created as part of Disquiet Junto weekly project 0529:  to make a piece of music that engages with the number 23.
This track has bars of 23 beats, it is 23 bars long.
I doubt the ear can discern the 23beat bar -but the rhythm is 123&12&12&123&12&12&123
The track has 3 drum tracks – done in bitwig. A Spitfire Audio piano, cello and violin plus acoustic drone recording of a metal sheet and a bit crushed megaphone announcement (in Japanese).The metal sheet friction drone is gate sequenced to an Euclidian patter on a 23 beat cycle.
The scale for the piano and strings is E+ F+ A B C+
Think it would make good closing credits music for a psychological thriller where a serial killer feasts on minor celebrities and influencers. The agent assigned to the case of course has his demons and struggles with his own autism -only to discover no one else has empathy for the victims either. It could be called LIKES!

Dandelion's Flight (disquiet0600)

This track celebrates the 600th Disquiet Junto Project!
For this jubilee project Marcus Fischer provided seven WAV files that were used in different ways to generate this track. All sounds audible in this track originate from these files but may be transformed heavily.

One synth melody and the drums were created using the generative MIDI sequencer Transition - but the sounds originate from the pitched down files provided.

Reaching Out [Disquiet0600]

Building on Marcus Fisher's (https://soundcloud.com/marcus_fischer) tracks 'hands held', 'worn path' and 'walking' - the first two of these combined and frozen in a granular sampler's buffer (beads), and hits from the third used to excite a resonator (rings). Some arrangement and processing in ableton, with 'hands held' bookending the final track.

The 600th Disquiet Junto? Wow. Thanks you so much, Marc, and of course all of you participants! The Junto has played a key role in my live, and I can’t thank all of you enough. 

I withstood the idea to go for pure ambient with the material. Instead I tried to make a mellow piece with a bit of a pulse. All sounds come from Markus Fischer’s lovely samples. I treated them with S&A Cycles, Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and Ableton’s Simpler for bass and melodies.

Disquiet Junto Project 0600: Reaching Out

The Assignment: This is a shared sample project. Rework a set of seven WAV files provided by Marcus Fischer.
Step 1: The musician Marcus Fischer, long a friend of and participant in the Disquiet Junto, has graciously put together a set of shared samples that will be the source audio for this project. Part of the beauty of a shared sample project is that there will be an underlying quality — a tonality, a texture, a commonality — to all the disparate works that are produced from the foundational material. Listening to the variations as they surface will be its own special source of pleasure. You can access the files here:

Step 2: You can rework the audio from Step 1 in any way that you see fit. You can use all of it, or just one tiny piece, or whatever subset you find strikes your ear. The one stipulation is your finished piece should begin and end with an unadulterated segment of one of the provided tracks for at least two seconds. Please credit Marcus Fischer when posting your track.
Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:
Step 1: Include “disquiet0600” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

This is the 600th Disquiet Junto. 600 weeks of fresh music! Congratulations to Marc Weidenbaum @disquiet and all the Disquiet Junto community for this important achievement!
This week I had the pleasure of re-working a collection of Marcus Fischer's wav files from which I selected nacre_voit and no_input_matrix_mixer files.
I decided to keep focusing on the higher part of the spectrum, just as I did on my previous disquiet 0599. I used synths and norns clone to interact and/or mangle the two selected .wav files.
It was difficult to keep things interesting and having control of everything while keeping an eye on the timing of such process.
For this recording I set up Morphagene to play nacre_voit.wav as a reel. The output was sent to a mult and then split to a mixer and to QPAS and Mimeophon for effects, then into the mixer with a non effected output.  
Arp 2600 clone and 0-Coast produces an high pitched voice that is similar to Marcus Fischer's nacre_voit.
Fates is running Gemini script with no_input_matrix_mixer.
The latter two are then effected with Hologram Microcosm Granules, Haze, 3rd preset. On previous takes I also tried Graintopia and Twine.
It's been the longest process I've ever had with any Disquiet Junto since my (recent) first submission (0590). For this last assignment I collected 13 different takes, it's a process that could have resulted in even more if I didn't restrain myself to call it finished. 
Lesson to be learnt is to keep patch simples: for this one I had complex patches running as I was trying to better understand all the capabilities of my newly arrived NANO Caixa 104 case, but the process of keeping everything under control and improvising without overdubs has been demanding. I think this one has suffered of a strange kind of horror vacui.

Both synths are controlled via MIDI through Arturia Keystep.

Generation (Son Of 0599)(disquiet0600)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
