Illumination – Hope To God

In the mid-1990s, two restless explorers of sound—Nicholas Sillitoe and Per Martinsen—came together as Illumination, a project that blurred the boundaries between studio precision and live improvisation. Their language was electronica, but one spoken with lo-fi grit, hi-fi clarity, and a deep trust in the energy of machines and the spontaneity of performance.

Released in 1995 on their +47 label, Hope To God arrived first as a 12″ single with raw, driving versions from Martinsen and a collaborative Istigkeit mix. Soon after, it re-emerged in the UK as a double 12″ and CD-EP, now expanded with atmospheric re-interpretations from kindred spirits, most notably Biosphere’s glacial remix.

The track became a touchstone in the Norwegian underground: hypnotic, searching, carried by layers of analog warmth and vocal fragments that felt half-remembered, half-divine. It embodied Illumination’s ethos—music that could be both a club weapon and a private prayer.

Decades on, Hope To God still resonates as more than a track: it is a moment in time, a reminder of a scene inventing itself, and a plea whispered through circuits that the future might yet hold light.

After five years in the desert, Geoglyph returns with a new solo album Otherworldly. Recorded on analogue synths, bass guitar, flute, and melodica, and with guest appearances from guitarists Jason Bond and Toby Snowden, this is a warm, proggy album with a handmade feel. Continuing on the path set by Geolinguistic and Messages from the Resonator, each track tells a story with contrasting sections. COME AND HEAR: inscrutable ceremonies in twilit caverns; ancient glyphs carved on stony mesas; impossible structures which defy space and time.

Aus Music follow up a string of releases from Shenoda, Recloose and Marquis Hawkes with a Disco-tinged 12” courtesy of a fresh signee and Millionhands head honcho Tee Mango. Having so far almost exclusively released on Millionhands alone, Tee Mango makes a rare appearance outside of his home turf and in doing so follows on from his acclaimed ‘Imperfections Vol.1’ LP which garnered widespread following from the likes of Axel Boman, Palms Trax, Gilles Peterson and Bonobo.
 
His EP#1 for Aus carries forth the sense of raw, sample heavy soul that was the real spark of Imperfections Vol.1, while maintaining a feel for the needs of the dancefloor. Loose, natural drums, deftly chopped samples and hazy synth lines keepit moody. This collection of 4 tracks could be the perfect soundtrack for those early days of sunshine.

The twelfth release of the Apparel’s limited catalogue is a brand new 4 tracks EP called “Signals” by the Mancunian featuring a 4-hands collaboration with @harrywolfman and a remix by @jad-lee. Every single track has been chosen carefully since the beginning of the project to make this record a representative work of the artist who perfectly blends his musical knowledge with the label’s imprint. Side B begins with the whimsical chords of “It’s Not So Cold In Tromso” where the artist takes the listener to a brief and intense trip to see the Norwegian northern lights; the track is made by a strong rhythm section and flighty, far-out, harmonies which really evoke Scandinavian landscapes.
