Retromigration - Say What

Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.”

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

Also features a stripped back rework by cult Japanese producer Yukihiro Fukutomi and Alexander Bradley himself with an extended deep, dubby and melodic Utopian mix. The mythical deep house works of Japanese producers such as Nagayama and Terada have become folklore with the latter's production for Nami Shimada entitled 'Sunshower' (featuring Larry Levan mix) his most recognized work. As of late, France has been a hotbed for up-and-coming house and disco labels, releasing some of the grooviest tunes pumped out on dance floors across the globe. Newly minted @Groovencerecords is no exception to this, bringing forth their their first label release with a various artists compilation that will leave your head buzzing, heart melting and feet stomping. VA releases can be hit or miss but "The Cosmic Groove EP” lives up to its name with funky, spaced out cuts that will have you calling Houston and assuring them that there is no problem.

Based out of Paris, the vinyl-only label has been releasing an 'invite' series of hour long sets to showcase their tastes, with one of the guests being @Luvless who is featured in our premiere today.

With releases on top notch labels such as Heist Recordings and his own imprint Rose Records, the only non-Frenchman on this compilation continues to churn out top-notch releases. Light and spacey, the track highlights another high class single from Luvless. 'Heavy Button' takes you on a 6 minute and 14 second rocket ship journey to the moon and back, zooming above the stratosphere with synths that warble through space and a classy vocal loop that hits the heart but fits gently within the groove. Crisp hi-hats echo throughout the track, bouncing back and forth between the drum beat which has strong hip-hop undertones until it wields that familiar 4x4 kick. Melodic keys swing back and forth keeping you in orbit until the track gently winds down and brings you back into the atmosphere for a smooth and safe landing.

Luvless secures his name on another slice of wax due to a consistency that we’ve come to know and love. Groovence comes out with a strong first showing, adding to an ever-growing list of independent vinyl-only labels in a burgeoning French scene.

Hiding slightly out of plain sight, Australian producer Mood J has been secretly crafting lush house jams for the last half decade bubbling just under the visible surface.

With the artist and Asquith having briefly touched base at the beginning of the label's journey, it took only a chance encounter in a Ballarat bungalow in 2016 to reignite the flames of the artist-label relationship. Jimmy surprisingly bumping into Jon (Mood J), as he was Daze's housemate in Aus, whilst the Lobster crew were on tour there.

Mood J's hard drive was stashed with archive of warm, sizzling, analogue studio tracks cooked to the nines, and so here we are just over 14 months later with the full epic debut in hand.

The edits-y anthem Turn Your Love Around kicks things off in huge fashion with a stomping & heaving flip of a proper classic. Arrangement never felt so tight and this one rides heftily into the night. NY Vibration follows, smoothing things out with a lolloping New York house twist layered with rippling, resonant deep haus pads, searing top lines and an easy spoken word. 

The flip kicks off with The Arps, a skittering hat skater with an ascending, descending and cascading arp line that hisses with sea spray and hot evenings in central Victoria. 

Providing the last hurrah of the night we have Moonlight Drive. Summer heartbreak captured in a single moment and a slap bass. A melancholy Juno riding over a hint of twinkling optimism, saying that it's not over yet.

@Manuel-Darquart is the alias shared by Sean Whittaker and Louis Anderson-Rich, two Auklanders and long-time friends bringing their love of 80's post-disco into the present with a serious touch of class. Having recently released on Seb Wildwood & Hollick's Coastal Haze, Manuel Darquart have been melding the cosmic ends of house and boogie with an effortless strut since 2012. The duo now prepare to kick off their third release with East London based Childsplay (@bemorechildish), a perfect home for their laid back and redolent Birds of Paradiso EP.

Sharing similar balmy territory with Harvey Sutherland and the Poolside boys, the track list plays out like a half-remembered summer's day out with friends and family. With Bolting Bits' premiere, Gutterball, melodic flourishes noodle and wash throughout the mix as crunchy hats swing and toms stagger about. Warmly filtered pads fill out the mix and the track allows itself to crystallize and settle into a breezy and buoyant roller. It makes for an effective reminder that even though the weather is beginning to turn, the good times needn't stop when the heat and sunshine are dripping from your speakers.
