DJ Neet & Gordon Brown Jr strikes back with their second release 'Breaking Dub', a follow-up to their debut album 'Research Program #1', heavily inspired by deep roots and reggae, released in 2017. Established and loved member of the Shall Not Fade Family, Felipe Gordon turns up the jazz influence on a fresh new EP for the label. The producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Colombia is known for his complex compositions and infectious beats, and Keepin’ It Jazz does not disappoint.

The record kicks off with ‘Analog Only’ - a highly textural beat forms the core of this bass-heavy groover that cruises along at a laid back pace, drawing the listener further in. Similarly gentle but hypnotic, ‘Continuous Develop’ has the heady ambience of the chillout room, but Gordon brings in his intricate dreamy instrumentation and acid hints to great effect. The second half centres a tasty bass solo that will get all heads nodding along. The title track is the chunkiest of house rhythms paired with delicate jazzy piano, a gliding summer party anthem. ‘Looking At Your Reflection In The Water’ is artful, perfectly emotive and gently rising like a tide from poolside piano into a hip-moving danceable pulse. The record closes out to ‘What You Say?’; funky house with attitude, a rude bassline and heavy swagger.

“Raised Vibrations feat. Brint Story / Yadava Remix” is the new release from producer, DJ and broken beat revivalist WheelUP aka West London’s Danny Wheeler. Linking with Alabamian rapper Brint Story, “Raised Vibrations'' showcases a different sonic side to the producer, stripping bare the percussive backbone of the track, leaving Brint’s alt-R&B vocals to “take the wheel”. While Mancunian producer, NTS resident and So Flute co-founder Yadava catalyzes the tune onto the dancefloor with a jazzy primed remix. 

“Raised Vibrations was something completely different stylistically for me, a rapper on a track with no drums… Working with Brint Story is super fun, we met in the Deep South of the US, through my cousin and I love his positive vibe and his style of rapping… combining Bruk West London Sound with an American rapper just made sense, it was not a plan to be different just a vibe that came naturally from my heart” Danny explains.

Brint Story / Yadava Remix” is the latest instalment from WheelUP’s debut album ‘Good Love’ a record that featured the likes of Bembe Segue, Abacus (Pola & Bryson) and label-mate Tiawa. ‘Good Love’ was heavily praised for its resurgent broken beat sound by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), A-Trak (Fools Gold), Dave 1 (Chromeo), Benji B (BBC Radio 1), Bonobo, Ben UFO, Emma Jean-Thackray, Laurent Garnier and many more. “Take Me Higher feat. Tiawa”, the second single from ‘Good Love’, was playlisted on BBC 6Music.

As an artist, producer and DJ of dual Zimbabwean and British heritage, growing up in the epicentre of bruk that is West London around the likes of Goya Music, IG Culture and Kaidi Tatham, it was only natural that Danny would gravitate towards the ‘West London Sound’; as WheelUP puts it: “It’s in my musical DNA”. Originating from the drum and bass world as Danny Wheeler, WheelUP follows the footsteps and lineage of 4hero, evolving from jungle/D&B to broken beat/bruk and was recently knighted an “honorary Bugz” by the original dons of broken beat, Bugz in the Attic, due to WheelUP’s work in pushing the bruk sound to new audiences.

Over the summer WheelUP has taken his DJ set and live band – that includes singer-songwriter and afro-raver Toya Delazy, Nathan “Tugg” Curran aka Planet Battago on On The Corner and session drummer (Basement Jaxx, Gorgon City, Elton John), as well as bassist Tom Mason, part of the London jazz scene (Robert Mitchell’s Panacea, Richard Spaven) – notably to Shambala and We Out Here festival, as well as to the venues Hootananny, Lost Horizon, and Night Tales.

Hans Peeman, perhaps better known as Junktion or as one half of Fouk with label mate and friend Daniel Leseman, also has another side project. New Franklin Theory is his lesser known alias, one focusing a bit less on sampling and more on melodic explorations, with a lot more synth work and instrumentation. He's only released under the moniker once before, a 2 track 10" on his own native Outplay Records that perhaps went a little bit under-appreciated. Now he's back once again on the label with a 5 track mini album of sorts, entitled "Chemical Boogie", to really showcase what he can do.

Peeman's signature percussion is perhaps best heard on the opener, Andromeda Beach, a funk and boogie fuelled jam that's closest to what we've come to know him for. Our premiere today and the A2 on the record, Homeward, features some fantastically spacey cosmic pads and a rumbling bass, lending it a bittersweet, introspective sound. Closing off the first side of the record is Afterburner, an uptempo groover with some addictive synthesized horn-like melodies. Ladies and gentlemen, we have liftoff.

On the flip, the B1, In Orbit, takes you for a ride. The funky bassline and deep rhodes chords paired with the interplanetary atmospheres and effects do the title justice. Finally, The Holtzman Effect, named after a fictional scientific phenomenon, caps off the EP with a hooking subterranean bass that sends you wiggling your butt straight into alien territory.It's refreshing to see a producer so well known for a particular sound continue to explore new avenues and evolve as personal tastes change and mature, but still retain some of that flavour that made his music so irresistible in the first place.

Here we are for the 4th round of @Apparel-Wax and a crazy one indeed for all the lovers of the vinyl masked man, a release that expresses 4 different nuances of House. Few words are needed to describe the debut of the vinyl with A1 track which is a rarely powerful combination of 2.0 Dance Music and 80’s vibes, a proper slap in the face to kick it off! Our unknown DJ then shifts to a more sensual mode with A2, where funky guitar shades and smooth chords blended with the vocals that drag us on a more intimate level of listening to keep on traveling on a lower tone. B side starts with a track guided by weaving Jazzy rhythmics dialoguing hectically with Samba and some jungle environmental recordings, creating a super personal interpretation of Brazilian Jazzy House, while to end up the 4th trip on Wax Planet, B2 blesses us with some more classic vibes with a sharp string’s melody and a rich bassline guided silently by a Rhodes piano and some pungent and melancholic female vocals, to end it up in style. The masked hero comes back after the LP with a 3 tracks EP landing in the summertime and it’s yet again worth the wait, as it brings back hints of that nu-disco house music we learnt to love but together with a new touch. “006A1” is the opening tune which is a funky view on the dancefloor with hints of blissful acid grooves and a meticulous structured arrangement, for club use only. "A2" is pertinent to the mood of the side A and it's a slower but solid groove with smooth vocals that come in without warning. A more classic approach to end the first part. B side is surely a masterpiece, a 11 minutes track taking over the whole side with a trippy approach containing so many musical inputs; throughout the whole composition we can hear how scrupulous is the sound research that the artist made, from sound design, to sampling and structuring, and the groove itself exploding in a mix of world music-afrofunk- beat belter, with the vocals giving it a touch of a tribal dance. A track to remember which surely lifts the level of the whole EP. A track we are, amongst the others, proud to release on our own label (@Apparel-Music).
