We're going a little off piste with something new on SB this week... We welcome returning mad scientist Scruscru with his buddy Mike Fot who came to us with the beginnings of a weird and wonderful new off shoot series called Spliff Jamz. 

Following a series of visits to Moscow between 2018 and 2020 to play at Powerhouse club, Scruscru would swing by Mike Fot’s apartment for a smoke and a jam session, working with a variety of Roland and Korg gear late into the night. The results of these sessions have led to a series of EPs; with the first four tracks ready for your ears right now.

Hold tight! - As Sunlightsquare band leader Claudio Passavanti unleashes the 2nd single from his gigantic recording album venture - ‘Britannia Shing-A-Ling’. Recorded at Studio Miloco Studios, London, Claudio enlisted 25 musicians and vocalists (A BIG BAND!) to take part in this phenomenal live album project. Following their first single release, ‘Land OF 1000 Dances, taken from the album, Sunlightsquare roll out the Afro-Cuban vibes covering Cuban Latin jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria’s 1976 smash ‘O Mi Shango’. Beamed out on Luke Una’s E Soul Cultura label, Transmission Towers first broadcast, Transmission One, has been causing a stir wherever it has been received. A debut album of music forged in a far-off dimension. Off-kilter, oddball yet deeply emotional machine soul, fused with an Afrofuturist touch courtesy of Mark Kyriacou and Eleanor Mante. Now Crooked Man reaches through the spacetime continuum to produce a set of brand-new, future-facing Transmission One remixes. Moving beyond the realms of your average remixes, Crooked Man sets forth a whole new album of transcendental, tripped-out productions that range from gravity-defying, cosmic meltdowns to brain-busting galactic dance workouts.  

A long-standing figure in the universe of electronic dance music, Sheffield-born Crooked Man aka Richard Barratt released one of bleep techno’s defining records back in ‘89. Landing on Warp, it came under the alias Sweet Exorcist with the late great Richard H. Kirk. Since then, Barratt has put out a slew of exceptional productions under a variety of different monikers from Crooked Man and Parrot to Earth Angel and Athletes of God. He has released on DFA, delivered countless remixes for Róisín Murphy and reimagined the likes of JIM and Joe Goddard. Every inch of that experience and expertise has been deployed on this Transmission Towers remix release.

Who better to rework an already off-kilter tour de force than the Crooked Man himself? Creating a new album's worth of material, he utilises the synthesised yet sentimental world of Transmission Towers yet flips it into ever more escapist dimensions. Take ‘Up’, once an early electro groover now a feverish, mutant dancefloor mind bender, or ‘Mega’, that’s twisted into a vocoder-led, sci-fi trance. Elsewhere, ‘Shadow’ morphs into a swirling breakbeat trip, ‘One’ becomes a marching, late-night, synth-pop foot stomper and ‘Everything’ is contorted from a post-punk guitar trip into a cybertronic, new beat heater. 

The album though is not all on a dancefloor trajectory, with tracks like ‘Roller Skater 23’ turned from an intergalactic cruiser into a dubbed-out dream state and ‘Cosmic Trigger’ leaning into a gravitational pull of space-echoed delays and sonic solar flares.

Every twist, every turn, Crooked Man plots new coordinates, yet the overarching journey is one of seamless synergy. This is music made in an alternate reality, that distorts time, warps minds, hits hard and sinks deep, leaving a lasting impression in an age of fading attention spans and throwaway content.

Mogan - Smooth Racer [Former City Records]

Originally released on Movers in 1976 out of the UK and later in the US on Downstairs Records, this instrumental groove variation on The O'Jays "For The Love Money" is just plain awesome.  A trippy dub version was used on the b-side and I've combined both together with a new intro and outro for this edit.  Expressly made for my last set at the legendary Bobby Viteritti's monthly Classics Never Die party in NYC, I hope you'll dig this one by the Disco Dub Band.

Coconut Grove & Quadrant Park Megamix Part 1

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon that fits perfectly into the musical scenario of the next years. 35-year-old American jazz pianist and 4 times Grammy nominated. He was the musical director of Carl Craig’s Synthesizer ensemble as well as the keyboarder in legendary Grammy wining band of Roy Hargrove (the IT jazz artist from the late 1990ies, who later died.) 

Holmes is always hunting for the new, so he moved to Berlin a few years ago. Being interested in what’s happening in that new dance world. Similar to Jazzers from the 1970ies like Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones who turned into disco stars Joel, the jazzer wanted to connect with the new Berlin electronic scene. He succeeded, teamed up with upcoming London house kid Cody Currie and the Toy Tonics crew who is working on new sounds in Berlin that connect the organic and jazz musicians scene with the dance and house world. Developing a new style of Jazz-House… (that has nothing to do with sampled jazzy‘ house! If you know what we mean). 

Joel and Cody Currie released 2 EPs that had a good buzz mainly in the UK and USA. Big support from the Worldwide FM and BBC Radio world as well from tastemaker DJs such as Bradley Zero, Gilles Peterson and Masters at Work.

While working on these EPs Joel created a kind of new jazz-dance universe around him in Berlin. He curates a bi-monthly jam session in an underground location where the crème de la crème of the international ex-pad -musician scene meet up. Joel became THE MAN to hang out when American musicians come to Berlin. Like when Erykah Badu was doing her Berlin gig in Berlin in 2019, after the show all the band moved to Joel's place to have a legendary jam session. Yes, there is a lot of happening in the new Berlin Jazz meets Electronic scene. And Joel Holmes is in the center now.

So it’s time for a Joel Holmes Solo EP. The EP was recorded in a couple of jam sessions. Later reworked and co-produced by Kapote and Sam Ruffillo and mixed by Justin Vanderfolgen from DFA in New York.

It’s a big step for Joel Holmes. He started to sing in a very smooth, deep way. He wanted to make dance tracks that have a song structure and should not be too static, but still be playable in good DJ sets. And that's what you get: A Lot of Soul. Deep House vibes in a New York style and Joel's skills as a keyboarder.

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon, for sure. And this EP could be a manifesto for what he is doing in Berlin now.
