Das Projekt „us & sparkles“ wurde von den in Zürich ansässigen Produzenten Roland Vollenweider und Philip Cron ins Leben gerufen. Roland Vollenweider ist studierter Psychologe und produzierte bis dato unter dem Namen „Steinklopfer“. Philip Cron studierte an der ZHDK bildende Kunst mit der Vertiefung mediale Kunst. Er veröffentlichte bis dahin unter dem Künstlernamen „paws“. Die Zusammenarbeit führe zu deren ersten Produktion – einer EP, die auf den klangvollen Namen: „Damn Rich“ getauft wurde und im Dezember 2014 auf Boyoom Connective veröffentlicht wurde. Auf dieser zeigte sich zum ersten Mal, was zur Essenz der Produktionen von „us & sparkles“ werden sollte: Langsame, stehende Bässe, gepaart mit verschobenen Grooves, die grosse Räume strukturieren und filigrane Klänge, die diesem Raum entspringen. Dies alles zubereitet mit einer ordentlichen Dosis Hi-Fi. Die EP „damn rich“ wurde am m4music 2015 zu den drei besten Demos im Bereich Elektro gewählt. Es folgten zwei weitere Veröffentlichungen: Zum einen die „None of this“ EP im Mai 2015 auf Ghosthall und andererseits die EP „Bubble Drops“ im August 2015 auf Baroque Records.
Die Klangwelten von „us & sparkles“ werden alle in deren Studio in Zürich geschaffen. In diesem einzigartigen Labor, in welchem sich namhafte Synthesizer stapeln, hunderte Kabel wirren und sich die Drummaschinen aneinanderreihen, verschmelzen analog und digital und es gewährt sich Zufall & Chaos. Die künstlerische Arbeit entsteht in der Selektion und in einer Reduktion und der Beschneidung auf das, was sich als wesentlich zu erweisen scheint. Aus hunderten Aufnahmen und unzähligen Skizzen ergibt sich so ein verdichtetes Klangmuster, das aus dem übriggebliebenen Destillat besteht, welches den hauseigenen Hauptkriterien Mood© und Ehrlichkeit© zu genügen vermochte. Auf deren Debutalbum, das nun erscheint, haben „us & sparkles“ mit anderen Künstlern zusammengearbeitet, die dem Album deren Gesang beisteuern. Das Album „love mode“ beinhaltet zehn Songs und führt den Prozess, der mit der EP „damn rich“ gestartet wurde“, konsequent weiter. Geil.
