Everything was fucked. The streets riddled with cracks and holes, lights sputtering on and off, unidentified liquids oozing out of long defunct air-conditioning units. Everything was fucked, but not for Mac. He was lingering outside a particularly shady café, slowly sipping a coffee that had more in common with the greasy puddles on the street than it really should. Nothing was really what it should be anymore; the infrastructure of Slüg Silo-7b had almost completely disintegrated to the point where everything was supplied through the black market one way or another. This was terrible for the good and upstanding GasPods who still had morals, ethics, and a conscience of some sort. For Slugs like Mac, it was the perfect situation. He mused on how far he’d come: a small-time salt-pusher who built his empire to a point where there was little competition (in this district anyway) and continued to expand his business interests into pretty much anything people desperately needed and couldn’t find. There is nothing like desperation to make a quick buck.

Charlie slunk into the smokey basement to the sound of a saxophone floating through the haze. He could always rely on this place to supply music to soothe the soul; he certainly needed some extra care and attention right now. Music is about shared passion and mutual respect, but that doesn’t mean you can always avoid people who want to take advantage of your talents. Years of work with a collaborator had lead to the swine releasing the music with barely a credit in Charlie’s direction. In the grand scheme of things, these people get what they deserve eventually. Until then, the knowledge that this dude was a talentless hack was enough for Charlie. Well, almost — he needed a few drinks. Past whack collaborators aside, the ideas were really flowing right now. He had multiple projects in the bag which were already sounding great, and with people who were in it for the right reasons.

Lumo had actually made it on time today, which the warehouse supervisor had mixed feelings about. He didn’t really feel it would help productivity, but at least it meant he didn’t have to start the day biting his newest employee’s head off. Lumo was a competent worker, but there had not been a day free of his bizarre behaviour since Mac had employed the new slug for the warehouse. For instance, on his fourth day at work, after disappearing for an hour, they found him hanging from his warehouse jacket on a hook in a storage cupboard pretending to be clothing. Even during the interview to hire him he’d somehow managed to roll over his own hand with the chair he was sitting in.

Far from the poisoned, industrial wasteland of Slüg Silo-7b, you could almost forget the destruction the slugs had inflicted on their home planet. All the way out in the mountains, the trees still stood tall and strong, rocking back and forth in the crisp, clear air. Out here, mother nature was the one in control, and the GasPods that had made it their home had developed a very different way of life. Unlike their modified and blistered city cousins, the locals had developed antler-like growths from each side of their skull, which allowed them to easily detect changes in atmospheric pressure and pre-empt drastic weather changes — an essential skill when you might not see another slug for weeks or months at a time.

Dr Zee left the crime lord’s den and slithered down a dark alley towards the nearest street. He could already see his Small Shell Orbital Cruiser waiting at the end, its rear lights casting an ominous red glow on the immediate surroundings. He had known many self-styled underground kingpins in his time. They came and went just like anything else; every time one was cut down, another would take their place pretty rapidly. It was best to not get too attached, as they were all a means to an end anyway; expendable tools to make his life easier. Zee, on the other hand, had been pulling the strings of GasPod society for hundreds of years now. He’d undergone so many organ transplants, blood transfusions, and skin grafts that he wasn’t really sure how much of his body was actually his own anymore. His mind was the bit that counted though, and his mind was more cunning and devious than ever.

Denni sat in her dingy basement connecting up her new toys. She’d been building her record collection for years now, but had never thought about digging through it to build her own tracks. She’d managed to acquire an old sampler and drum machine and had selected a perfect sample - a short section of piano from the intro of an unlabelled jazz record. She dropped the needle on the record and recorded a few seconds in to the dusty machine, cutting it across her keyboard. Firing up a drum loop from earlier she jammed her new found vibe over the top. She sunk back in to her chair and grinned with satisfaction, she probably wouldn’t be seeing anybody for a couple of weeks...

There had been reports all over the city; sightings of a hovering…thing. An object made of an unknowable substance, floating at head height. The reports had initially come in slowly with no apparent logic to their location, but more and more sightings were being called in in the past few days. Some grainy footage had begun to appear; a dark circle drifting in and out of focus. Was it a threat? It was definitely unprecedented, and there was a tension in the air as the GasPods struggled to process an unknown and uninvited entity in their midst. How do they react to something so far outside of their understanding? Maybe it was some kind of a mass hallucination; maybe their ecosystem of industrial decay was taking its toll. The videos suggested otherwise, but for now they would just have to hope it didn’t transition from intruder to invader, and do their best to carry on life as normal…

We’re excited to present Seppa’s second album, ‘Split’. Arriving March 24th, this release marks a further move into rich atmospheres and otherworldly soundscapes, fully embracing the psychedelia that has always laced his music. ‘Split’ takes you on a sonic journey from start to end fusing ethereal structures with high intensity rhythms and low end movements. In his usual style he bridges a wide variety of tempos and moods never landing where you would anticipate, but always where you wanted to go. ‘Split’ is a worthy step forward from his 2018 album ‘More’, and cements Seppa’s position as an artist to watch in the future.

Deep underground was a vast network of tunnels. As the majority of the GasPod population slithered through the drudgery of their day-to-day lives on the surface, a small group were pushing themselves to reach something profound. They hadn’t named themselves—what they were trying to achieve transcended that in their minds. They met four times a year, miles underground, in a space which had existed for far longer than any records of slug kind. It was a large, domed space, gently illuminated by some kind of gently glowing fungus. It was possibly the warped result of industrial waste draining into the ground above, but nobody could say definitively one way or the other. The hunch was that it was much older than that. The fungus seemed to have been trained into patterns resembling letters in an alien language, or maybe it was just a trick of the mind trying to make order from chaos.

Chalky & Seppa return with their much anticipated follow up to 2018s ‘Bright Spots’. Picking up where the previous album left off, ‘Strange Changes’ pushes their music hybridisation into new territory, exploring unusual sound palettes and combinations of ideas to create an arresting journey through jazz fuelled psychedelia. The process was informed by the unexpected pressures, twists and turns of life, including a broken hand and living hours apart, with the album title becoming more relevant month by month. The outcome is a body of work that is both unexpected and engaging, worth listening to in its entirety to garner the full experience. They were fortunate to work with several of their favourite musicians. One Kind Eye delivers a powerful vocal performance on ‘Falling Forward’, Jim Bastow features on the Fender Rhodes in ‘Scaphoid’ and Myr deploys his highly nuanced modular setup on ‘Subaqueous Broadcast’. ‘Strange Changes’ presents a window into the strange new future we see unfolding before us, effortlessly combining the alien and the familiar with Chalky and Seppa’s own inimitable flair.
