As the setting red dwarf cast long shadows over the towering fortress of Slüg Silo-7b, Frank stared absently at the glistening trails of mucus left by the inhabitants going about their evening business. Tumultuous clouds scoured overhead, propelled by fierce storms in the upper atmosphere of Gastropodia Prime, reminding him that merely a thin layer of gas protected them all from the sucking void of interplanetary space. Glancing to his right, he noticed how the myriad lights of the increasingly looming domicile towers blinked to life, illuminating the vast mounds of trash collecting by street corners and down dank alleyways. Waiting. He seemed to spend most of his time waiting these days. Despite constantly trying to fill these moments of inaction with unnecessarily long winded descriptions of his surroundings, drawing the sentences out in to complex strings of borderline incomprehensible prose in the hope he might convince himself that his life was worthwhile, a thing of substance, he could not shake the nagging feeling in his stomach that something wasn’t quite right.

The Whack Lack series is about artists creating their own battlewax record, with tunes designed to work in their own right, as well as giving scratch DJs and vocalists some new material to work with. The battlewax concept is to keep it simple yet effective, focussing on the right hook with the right beat and nothing more. By encouraging a variety of artists to work on the series they can each find their own sound within it, and have a different outlet for their creativity that doesn’t revolve around dance floors and mix down tech. Denni leans back and sparks one up. It’s brutal outside but no point stressing about what you can’t control. Much better to focus on achievable goals, gotta nail that cut today. She leans forward, gets up and steps over to the mixer leaving pockets of chaos in the dense smokey air filling the room. Wiping the mixer clear of the slime from her last attempt, she hits play on the right turntable and when the beat drops cuts something fierce until her arm cramps up. She stares at the ceiling and thinks, “Ahh I’ll get it tomorrow,” before taking one more drag and passing out.

Slowly and with purpose, Mac works his way through the twilight streets and meandering alleys. Despite appearing lost in his own thoughts, he keeps one ear on the world around him, listening for the hiss of any approaching GasPod over the creak of his leather jacket. It pays to avoid being taken by surprise when you’re in his line of work. As he rounds the next corner and slides into a pool of flickering amber light, a dishevelled pamphlet blows into him and gets caught on his sleeve. More election related bullshit. Pulling it free reveals the tag line, “A vote for Mustard is a vote for death by starvation and genital mutilation. A vote for Beige is a vote for sticking it to the Mustard guys and big buckets of cash.” The majority of the sheet is taken up by a badly lit photo of what appears to be a desiccated corpse in a tie. The rictus grin on the candidate’s face implies that she’s read about smiling but never seen it in the flesh. Underneath the image it says “Ophelia Winston-Burbage - Blue candidate for Slügstoop South”. There’s no further information.

Sinking back in to a deflated old sofa, Jed closes his eyes and lets the sound waves wash over him. The alien grunts and rumbles work well with his current state of mind—Mac has delivered once again. He opens his eyes and glances over to the corner where Petey is hunched over a laptop, pulling sounds straight out of hyperspace. He smiles; the crew is smashing it right now, and on their own terms. They'll be able to take it out to the gaspods soon, but until then, they just have to keep working and building. He sits up straight and leans over to a mountain of salt on the table. His brain disintegrates and he feels himself dissolve into billions of molecules.

“Oh… uhm, Mr. Mac, I am expecting another patient. Your appointment isn’t until later this week,” fumbles the dentist. 

Mac breathes out slowly, “It’s just ‘Mac', and I finished my business sooner than expected. I’m pretty sure the next GasPod won’t kick up a fuss.” His yellowed eyes glint ominously. The dentist decides it’s best to give him what he wants. He’s one of those slugs you don’t want to get on the wrong side of.

Staring out the window, Denni knew what she had to do. It’s always when she’s got a free day to herself that something would mess up her flow, and today it was a broken stylus. No scratching until she sorts that one out—nobody would deliver to her block, as she resided a few miles beyond where the road stopped being functional, disintegrating from a lack of maintenance and a lack of interest from the powers that be. The real kicker was that her favourite manufacturer has had their only remaining factory levelled by an unexplained explosion. It was likely some kind of military test or fuck-up, since they feel like they can do what they want around here; nobody has enough of a say to do anything in retaliation. It was best for her to go see her guy and hope he’s stocked up, and that he doesn’t rip her off knowing this is the last batch.

Everything was fucked. The streets riddled with cracks and holes, lights sputtering on and off, unidentified liquids oozing out of long defunct air-conditioning units. Everything was fucked, but not for Mac. He was lingering outside a particularly shady café, slowly sipping a coffee that had more in common with the greasy puddles on the street than it really should. Nothing was really what it should be anymore; the infrastructure of Slüg Silo-7b had almost completely disintegrated to the point where everything was supplied through the black market one way or another. This was terrible for the good and upstanding GasPods who still had morals, ethics, and a conscience of some sort. For Slugs like Mac, it was the perfect situation. He mused on how far he’d come: a small-time salt-pusher who built his empire to a point where there was little competition (in this district anyway) and continued to expand his business interests into pretty much anything people desperately needed and couldn’t find. There is nothing like desperation to make a quick buck.

Music is about shared passion and mutual respect, but that doesn’t mean you can always avoid people who want to take advantage of your talents. Years of work with a collaborator had lead to the swine releasing the music with barely a credit in Charlie’s direction. In the grand scheme of things, these people get what they deserve eventually. Until then, the knowledge that this dude was a talentless hack was enough for Charlie. Well, almost — he needed a few drinks. Past whack collaborators aside, the ideas were really flowing right now. He had multiple projects in the bag which were already sounding great, and with people who were in it for the right reasons.

Hopps felt that the new weapon had so far proved effective beyond anyone’s wildest imaginings. Every threat she had been up against had been less than no match and as she grew more comfortable piloting the thing, the rest of the Slime Militia's arsenal seemed increasingly obsolete. She did not feel entirely comfortable with the power she wielded - having the power to level cities in an afternoon was a little tough to rationalise - but orders were orders, and her training had been thorough. 

Her comms buzzed with an incoming transmission. 

“Lieutenant, we’ve received a distress signal from one of our refuelling facilities on the southern continent. We couldn’t get details on the threat before their communications went down completely. Please investigate immediately, we’re transmitting the coordinates now.” 

“Message received, en route now.”

Far from the poisoned, industrial wasteland of Slüg Silo-7b, you could almost forget the destruction the slugs had inflicted on their home planet. All the way out in the mountains, the trees still stood tall and strong, rocking back and forth in the crisp, clear air. Out here, mother nature was the one in control, and the GasPods that had made it their home had developed a very different way of life. Unlike their modified and blistered city cousins, the locals had developed antler-like growths from each side of their skull, which allowed them to easily detect changes in atmospheric pressure and pre-empt drastic weather changes — an essential skill when you might not see another slug for weeks or months at a time.

Our Whack Lack series is about artists creating their own battlewax record; with tunes designed to work in their own right, as well as giving scratch DJs and vocalists some new material to work with. The battlewax concept is to keep it simple yet effective, focusing on the right hook with the right beat and nothing more. By encouraging a variety of artists to work on the series, they can each find their own sound within it, and have a different outlet for their creativity that doesn’t evolve around the dance floor and mix-down tech.

For the fourth edition, we’re thrilled to have @simiah87, a beats connoisseur and talented MPC instrumentalist! Currently residing in Bristol, UK, he has worked extensively with legendary UK label @KingUnderground as a core part of their roster. Alongside an extensive back catalogue of inspired beat-smithery, he is a central player in The Phantom Ensemble and regular collaborator with fellow slug @chalkywhitemusic. Denni sat in her dingy basement connecting up her new toys. She’d been building her record collection for years now, but had never thought about digging through it to build her own tracks. She’d managed to acquire an old sampler and drum machine and had selected a perfect sample - a short section of piano from the intro of an unlabelled jazz record. She dropped the needle on the record and recorded a few seconds in to the dusty machine, cutting it across her keyboard. Firing up a drum loop from earlier she jammed her new found vibe over the top. She sunk back in to her chair and grinned with satisfaction, she probably wouldn’t be seeing anybody for a couple of weeks...

There had been reports all over the city; sightings of a hovering…thing. An object made of an unknowable substance, floating at head height. The reports had initially come in slowly with no apparent logic to their location, but more and more sightings were being called in in the past few days. Some grainy footage had begun to appear; a dark circle drifting in and out of focus. Was it a threat? It was definitely unprecedented, and there was a tension in the air as the GasPods struggled to process an unknown and uninvited entity in their midst. How do they react to something so far outside of their understanding? Maybe it was some kind of a mass hallucination; maybe their ecosystem of industrial decay was taking its toll. The videos suggested otherwise, but for now they would just have to hope it didn’t transition from intruder to invader, and do their best to carry on life as normal…

We’re excited to present Seppa’s second album, ‘Split’. Arriving March 24th, this release marks a further move into rich atmospheres and otherworldly soundscapes, fully embracing the psychedelia that has always laced his music. ‘Split’ takes you on a sonic journey from start to end fusing ethereal structures with high intensity rhythms and low end movements. In his usual style he bridges a wide variety of tempos and moods never landing where you would anticipate, but always where you wanted to go. ‘Split’ is a worthy step forward from his 2018 album ‘More’, and cements Seppa’s position as an artist to watch in the future.

Deep underground was a vast network of tunnels. As the majority of the GasPod population slithered through the drudgery of their day-to-day lives on the surface, a small group were pushing themselves to reach something profound. They hadn’t named themselves—what they were trying to achieve transcended that in their minds. They met four times a year, miles underground, in a space which had existed for far longer than any records of slug kind. It was a large, domed space, gently illuminated by some kind of gently glowing fungus. It was possibly the warped result of industrial waste draining into the ground above, but nobody could say definitively one way or the other. The hunch was that it was much older than that. The fungus seemed to have been trained into patterns resembling letters in an alien language, or maybe it was just a trick of the mind trying to make order from chaos.

Chalky & Seppa return with their much anticipated follow up to 2018s ‘Bright Spots’. Picking up where the previous album left off, ‘Strange Changes’ pushes their music hybridisation into new territory, exploring unusual sound palettes and combinations of ideas to create an arresting journey through jazz fuelled psychedelia. The process was informed by the unexpected pressures, twists and turns of life, including a broken hand and living hours apart, with the album title becoming more relevant month by month. The outcome is a body of work that is both unexpected and engaging, worth listening to in its entirety to garner the full experience. They were fortunate to work with several of their favourite musicians. One Kind Eye delivers a powerful vocal performance on ‘Falling Forward’, Jim Bastow features on the Fender Rhodes in ‘Scaphoid’ and Myr deploys his highly nuanced modular setup on ‘Subaqueous Broadcast’. ‘Strange Changes’ presents a window into the strange new future we see unfolding before us, effortlessly combining the alien and the familiar with Chalky and Seppa’s own inimitable flair.
