Androgynous Mind is a new project from former Women guitarist-vocalist Patrick Flegel, and whilst only five songs are on the Nightstalker EP, just hearing him with a guitar should be enough to get fans of his former work excited. 

Flegel is joined by Morgan Cook, who plays things straight and primal against his dissonance and squall, that is when she isn't wailing along with him, like on the opening pair of tantrums that sound like some lost Harry Pussy recording session. It's over in a blink before segueing into “Knock On My Door,” a spectrally understated pop gem worth playing bleary-eyed at four in the morning. “Knock” revels in Flegel’s distinctive guitar presence, working shapely lattices of notes into descending sheets of melody in a manner both lulling and forceful, but you remember that from 'Public Strain', right?

Post-punk guitar intricacies rarely mesh with pop hooks so masterfully, yet Flegel has proven himself many times to be staggeringly adept at both. With Androgynous Mind he and Cook have striped their ideas to the bone, revealing   a thing both harsh and beautiful, direct and engaging.

A wonderful follow up to last year’s masterpiece “Light Show” - may we present “Weird Moons”.

Here we have an eminently listenable but intrinsically weird pop record that is unlike anything else you'll hear today. This record pulses with vitality and a mercurial strangeness, but is at every turn undeniably pop. So pop, in fact you would be forgiven for jamming to the tunes alone, but underneath the surface the lyrics follow an otherworldly concept, a bizarre and engrossing story, continued in some ways and with similar actors as his previous record, Light Show - dig if you will:

The Shadows have been catapulted post-mortem to the leviathan planet Jupiter with its 67 known Moons. Reborn as lycanthropes with eyes intently focused on the lunar array above them, The Shadows are eternally shifting shape, based on which Moon is closest and cresting the horizon.  Their current body denotes their creative abilities, their only respite is the volcanic Moon Io’s inevitable rise and their cyclic disintegration.  Observed by mirror-eyed Watchers, The Shadows are trapped forever in a circle of creation and destruction, yet are by their nature compelled to their monkish watchfulness of The Moons. Love and hate, performance and audience, rise and fall, inhale…exhale…

weird?…. indeed

moons?…full of the same shadowy mystery of luna’s face smiling down on a darkened Earth.

"Shake The Shackles" is Crystal Stilts' first release since "Love Is A Wave" and is a great snapshot of where the band is now and a taster for their forthcoming second album, due early 2011. Driven by echoed guitar strum and droning keys, it's a dexterous update of 60s garage pop that places it alongside late 80s Paisley Underground heroes like Green On Red and later Dream Syndicate, but the song itself is totally timeless, and impossible to place anywhere but firmly in Crystal Stilts' own unique style.

The KVB - Never Enough

Slumberland began operations in 1989, inspired by such musical happenings as C-86, early Creation, Sarah, Postcard, and the UK post-punk indie label scene. Since then we've covered a lot of territory, from punk to lofi noise to shoegaze and of course pop, releasing records from bands like The Aislers Set, Boyracer, Stereolab, Rocketship, Lorelei, The Ropers, The Saturday People and Black Tambourine.

By the mid 2000s we were starting to see a resurgence of interest in guitar pop and the start of the ongoing vinyl revival: the perfect environment for Slumberland! We launched into our latest phase of activity with as string of classic releases from The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose, Veronica Falls, Allo Darlin', Joanna Gruesome and so many more.

2018 is our twenty-ninth year we are still going strong, ploughing our own furrow and bringing you unique, genre-defining (and genre-defying!) releases from bands like Smokescreens, Tony Molina, Papercuts, Business of Dreams, Peel Dream Magazine, D.A. Stern, The Spook School, Frankie Rose, Young Guv, Terry Malts and many, many more. As always, we operate entirely outside of the echo chamber of trends, fashion and phoney hipness. Slumberland bands are independent in the best way possible -- making music devoid of bullshit and true to their own voices, regardless of current popular taste.
