Q: How did you approach the process? 

A: Knowing that all of the loops and samples needed to be able to interlock with one another in rhythm, key and structure we decided to make some short and fast evolving tracks which not only packed in lots of ideas but also worked together when layered. We then sampled out all of the individual parts. We sent the tracks we’d made off to a vocalist we use regularly and she jammed some functional phrases over the top. That formed the bulk of the pack, the rest was made up of some modified samples and loops from some classic Audiojack productions that people have known over the years. 

Q: How was the overall experience? 

A: It was a fairly organic one once we’d digested the specifications required. We made a decision how we’d do it and got on with it. It turned out to take much, much longer than we’d hoped due to other musical projects and heavy touring but we got there in the end cracking on with it when we had a break in our schedules.

Q: What can people expect to get from your sample pack? 

A: We’ve used a lot of sample packs in the past and found they were a little too drum focused so we wanted to include more warm pads and synths because these elements  - when you come across something you really like – can be the backbone of a great track. 

Q: How has sampling and the use of samples played a role within your own productions? 

A: Our background experience in music production was all sample based from the early 90s with Amiga programs like Octamed, and when in 2005 we decided to put Audiojack together we used these techniques to start out making the music. Plugins were completely alien to us during the early years and we relied exclusively on the samples we’d acquired. It’s a really nice inroad for aspiring producers to have some samples that fit together nicely so you can get the gratification of a finished track with limited experience. Then as your skills and techniques develop – as did ours – you can start experimenting making your own sounds using plugins. 

Q: Focus on one Key Plugin that you recommend. 

A: A great plugin we’ve used extensively in the pack is Native Intruments: Massive. The main benefit is the level of manipulation you can achieve with it, you can take a base sound and then assign different macro functions to eight pots and really twist up the sound into something crazy which is great for taking basic track with only a few sounds in it and making it evolve over the it’s course without it getting mundane. It’s also great for building up tension in a sound during a break or such. It takes time to learn it all but once you’ve got the hang of it the possibilities are limitless. On the other hand if you just want to get going straight away there are loads of interesting presets to go at all with their own macros set up to mess around with the sounds. We’ve use this plugin for everything from bass lines to pads and effects.

Q: Please give our readers a production ‘’Tip’’ or ‘’Trick’’ that you use regularly or that defines your sound? 

A: One tip you’ll hear time and time again is that less is more. If you have just drums and a bass line the track will sound more powerful than if you pile loads of different layers on top of it. If you come to a break down and want the next drop to sound louder and have impact, don’t search for sounds to add when it kicks in but look at what you can take away in the break to bring things down. All sound is relative to what is happening before or after it.

Q: Please give us an insight into what the future holds for you. 

A: Early in the year we were asked to remix Romanthony’s classic track Trust by Glasgow Underground and shortly after submitting it we heard the tragic news of his passing. We’ve also just completed a track with LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang; a remake of Dennis Parkers Like An Eagle for Gomma Records as part of their Casablanca back catalogue re-release project. After that we’re concentrating on original projects for 2020 Vision and our own label Gruuv. We’re touring regularly for the rest of the year, mostly in Europe with gigs in London, Ibiza, Berlin, Glasgow, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Munich, Bordeaux etc.
