Dave Twomey [Mariana // aka Tr nch / Time To Express] UK

Dave's first gig was at Lakota in Bristol in 1998, as the paint was literally still drying after a one year 'refurbishment' of the infamous West country club. 4 years on, one abroad, in 2002 he won Muzik magazine's monthly mixing competition BEDROOM BEDLAM. In the same year he once again moved, this time to Japan. During his 8 year stay he held various residencies at Yellow, Air, Womb, Colors Studio & Warehouse702 injecting a well needed dose of the European underground into the Tokyo club scene. A keen & prolific event organiser over the years, various projects led him to his current focus MARIANA - deep, trippy & liquid techno events inspired centrally by the Mariana trench & its fearsome creatures. Past guests include the likes of Ben Klock, Peter Van Hoesen, Mike Parker & Delta Funktionen and the MARIANA DUB SESSION PODCAST, showcasing the Mariana sound, has received praise from the likes of MLZ & Peter Van Hoesen among others.

Performing as Dave Twomey what results is an organic, ever-evolving blend of steppy rhythms, tech house, techno and more, as much at ease performed on 100% vinyl as using Ableton, CDJ's or Serato. The present is everything; old, new & potential all wrapped up into one little journey. Fireworks, however you look at it.  

Dave is currently back in the UK tending to his roots, focusing on production, but interspersed with regular trips to Japan to continue Mariana & tour. Dave's debut 12-inch release under his TR NCH alias is a collaboration with IORI on TIME TO EXPRESS. Described in press as 'mesmerising' with support from the likes of Cio D'Or, Laurent Garnier, & Chris Liebing among others. 

The Tr nch sound explores the underbelly of techno - pulsating, throbbing soundscapes that mirror & draw influence from the deepest place on earth, the Mariana trench in the Pacific Ocean. The Tr nch DJ and live set involves deep, ephemeral & liquid techno, and like any Dave Twomey set draws heavily on a love of hypnotic music you can lose yourself in, vinyl of course & a 12 year DJ career which so far has taken Dave to Russia, Argentina, China, Chile, Germany, Paraguay, Brasil and Japan …  

More production collaborations, Mariana tours & events in Japan and Europe, and even a Mariana vinyl label are in the works.

Fresh from Stochastic Drift, Barker’s buzzing second album named Bleep Record of the Month alongside an exclusive 12”, Barker sends a mix that really digs deep into the unique sonic methodology he has constructed across his solo career width a suitable breadth for what is also a milestone in the series, Bleep Mix #300.

From Debiasing to Utility to Stochastic Drift, Barker has been reimagining club music without its definitive thump, instead driven by melody and tactile synthesis, and this selection of tracks expands Barker’s soundworld with a host of artists walking a similar path. “For this mix, I picked out some of my favourite uptempo ambient tracks, recorded at home with two decks and a mixer. It’s music I've used in a lot of different contexts, as a DJ and listener, and I hope you enjoy it.”

Though the occasional dancefloor thump makes itself known, such as on Adriana Lopez’ ‘What Lies Behind’, it’s mostly in quaking subs rather than actual four to the floor, providing some ground for this mix’s airy freeform variety to fly over. We have the wooden plunks and seaspray of Afefe Iku’s Kenyan island sound, the wonky gamelan of Tyler Friedman’s maze of bells and chimes, the dense atmosphere of shaker-produced rain and electrical chirps forged deep in the ruins of The Future Sound Of London.

The midsection of this mix contains some magic in particular: the maestro of drumless trance Lorenzo Senni creates motion from pure jagged synth energy on ‘The Power of Failing’, dissolving into the aether of an unreleased Barker track, which further discharges into the kaleidoscopic stutters of Caribou’s ‘Never Come Back’ with jubilant piano chords and vocal clips wrought into a glitchy, swirling maelstrom of Koreless' prickly warmth. Digital Justice’s ‘Theme From It’s All Gone Pearshaped’ follows, a timeless staple for anyone wishing to dabble in melodic motion and synthsmithery, or any DJ set seeking to add some lift without losing momentum, of which this mix is in no short supply.

Bleep Mix #300 - Barker

A fittingly lush mix filled with dusty, wobbly perfection from the lovely Helsinki based @suskidj this week.

I met Suski when she warmed up for me the first time I played at Post Bar in Helsinki a few years ago - a place i've returned to a few times and truely adore! Suski is a resident at the much-loved Helsinki club. I was initially drawn to her dj'ing as the set she played as a warm-up in Post Bar was a pitch-perfect and contextually divine fit for the space & time. 

This mix is a poignant follow up - diving through through the rich textures of immersive techno, and an entire journey through the world of electronica & idm with broken beats, ambience and charmingly off-kilter percussive rhythms.

The Bunker Podcast 235 comes from @erikluebs. This is a live set recorded in Milan on March 28 at the party Acquario.

Erik Luebs is a US-born musician and sound designer based in Japan. Eschewing typical genre tropes, Luebs approaches techno with a playfully disruptive technique, reinterpreting the fundamentals using built-from-scratch patches and labyrinthine sequencing. While the labor-intensive process is inspired by a wide range of luminaries such as Mark Fell and Rrose, the resulting music is firmly tied to the dance floor.

Luebs released an EP on The Bunker back in 2021, and has since released on DJ Nobu’s Bitta label (@djnobu_bitta), and @nousklaeraudio. He also has an upcoming release on the legendary @kompakt imprint.

Erik will be playing an ambisonic surround sound set for a horizontal audience at Going In at Reforestor’s Laboratory in Brooklyn this Friday, and an extended sunrise dancefloor set at The Bunker’s takeover of @nowadaysnyc Nonstop on Sunday morning.

One half of the mind behind our festival’s curation, Kasper (@kaspermarott) delivered on a signature mix of ethereal, deep, and progressive techno to swirl under the morning sun. Rolling rhythmically for the whole 3 hours and splashing moments of ecstatic humanism throughout, this is Vessel in perhaps its truest form; sunrise, fog, and a collective, concrete-shaking movement.
