Después de la salida de The Million Colour Revolution empezamos a viajar mucho. Pero antes de hacer las Américas, hubo una época en la que fuimos mucho a Londres. Una de tantas personas interesantes que conocimos entonces fue Nick del sello @freshlysqueezed , que se ocupó de que Sonido Total se prensara en vinilo. Nos pasó un montón de música de su sello y gracias a él dimos con una joya de la que nos apropiamos rápidamente para hacer este mashup que hoy os regalamos. Uno de nuestros favoritos de todos los tiempos: os dejamos con Medium Wave de Voodoo Trombone Quartet y Love Tape de estos servidores. El Mash-up fue editado en el disco doble de remezclas de TMCR, "More Colours!".

Mantra is the new single from Surf Coast multi instrumentalist Immy Owusu and his first with Melbourne label Hopestreet Recordings. Mantra is a dreamy slice of Immy’s ‘Afrodelik’ approach to music, a sound that spans psychedelic rock, funk and West African roots.

Immanuel Kwabena Dreesens-Owusu grew up in two worlds: the sea bleached lifestyle of Torquay and the Surf Coast with its rock n roll soundtrack, and the musical heritage of his Ghanaian / Dutch family. Immy’s father Kojo is one of Australia’s best regarded West African musicians and his grandfather Koo Nimo is a legend of Ghanaian Highlife and Palm Wine music active since the 1960s. From them Immy learned Ashanti music and its instruments, added a fuzz pedal and began to experiment. 

Immy spent much of the pandemic living in his caravan in the bush near Bells Beach where he wrote Mantra, letting the Australian landscape and the African rhythms percolate to create a dreamy track with unstoppable momentum. Raw and rhythmic bass and drums at the forefront, Mantra opens with a roughly picked guitar hook. Echo vocals come from all around, spooky but not ominous, telling us to face our fears and give them up to a higher power. ‘When you worry, when you’re feeling down. All your darkness, give it all to me. This is my mantra’. The track builds with layered synthesizers and pads drawing you into an unfamiliar world. 

Of Mantra, Immy says ‘My family always said as a kid that when I was worried about something that I could give these negative feelings up to the Angels, The Great Mother, Jesus, God or the Universe, depending on which family member I was asking.’

After two years of blowing up French, European and American stages, Smokey Joe & The Kid present their first release LP “Nasty Tricks” on French record label Banzaï Lab. A dangerously efficient mix of hip hop, electro and old Swing, that even 2Pac and Al Capone couldn’t say no to…
In this project, Smokey Joe (Bordeaux’s main musical mafia head) and The Kid aka “Senbeï,” (cheeky Parisian master of Turntablism), transport us back in time gangsters run streets of 1930’s Chicago. After a 1st EP released in June 2012 and of which 2 tracks had been on Beatport HipHop Top 100 for several months, the duet comes back in March 2013 to confirm that try with their 1st LP “Nasty Tricks”.
Great collaborations enhance that first opus: Puppetmastaz, R-Wan (Java), Lateef the Truthspeaker, Nomadic Massive, Youthstar (Chinese Man), Random Recipe, Sugaray...
With the help of their accomplices, these two gangsters mix Hip Hop and Electro with the groove and melodies of early 20th century Swing. Percussion solos played with scratches, beats and melodies banged out on the MPC, everything is performed live, there’s no doubt that Smokey Joe & The Kid know how to make a dancefloor go wild!!
