AMERIKA INDIGENA

South African artist/beatmaker Spoek Mathambo’s latest project is his meditation on the healing properties of bass, having used stripped down bass dubs as therapy during the most strenuous parts of 2020. The title, Hikikomori Blue refers to the Hikikomori social phenomenon of modern-day hermits  (Japanese: ひきこもり or 引きこもり, lit. "pulling inward, being confined"). 

Spoek Mathambo is a South African artist, musician, songwriter & filmmaker. With four critically acclaimed solo albums in his catalogue,  not to mention his collaborative band projects Fantasma and Batuk, and a documentary on SA electronic music (Future Sound of Mzansi), Spoek Mathambo is a prolific creative, showcasing and stretching the limits of electronic music and hip hop.

With Hikikomori Blue, Mathambo boldly strips away the 4/4 beats he’s known for and focuses on the polyrhythmic funk of gnawa gimbri and the belly rattling swing of dub bass. With less focus on the bassdrum, Mathambo keeps time with nimble percussion. The songs are a unique form of the blues, where Spoek Mathambo takes a wry look at matters of the heart, with irreverent rap verses about love gained and love lost.

A man named Jonathan Sullivan appeared on The Katie Halper Show last week after appearing on Anderson Cooper to talk about the storming of the Capitol and the fatal shooting of one of the rioters, which he not only witnessed but filmed. Sullivan presented himself to Cooper, The Washington Post, Chris Hayes, Katie and more as a "Civil Rights Activist," Black Lives Matter supporter, who was documenting the riot and trying to diffuse the situation. In fact, Katie was introduced to Sullivan by another guest on the show, filmmaker Dan Cohen, who arrived at the Capitol right after the shooting. During the show, Katie realized Sullivan wasn't exactly what he presented himself as to Cohen and others. One of the people she shared her concerns with was journalist and frequent guest Max Blumenthal (https://twitter.com/MaxBlumenthal), who was also covering the Capitol breach. Katie and Max reviewed the footage that Sullivan released later and discovered it contradicted what he said to Katie on the show. Max then took a deep dive into the bizarre story of John Sullivan, aka JaydenX, aka Activist John, interviewing not only John, but his brother, the woman making a documentary about them and actual Black Lives Matters activists who have tried to warn people that Sullivan is an instigator who puts the movement and people's lives at risk.
