[Wisłoujście DJ Contest Win] Troops of Tomorrow

An extract from my residency playing at RSO in Berlin for Ellen Allien's infamous night We Are Not Alone!

Opening We Are Not Alone - RSO, Berlin - 14-15.05.22

I uploaded the first hour of the opening set I played for @voxnoxberlin earlier this year. The recording starts with some ambient because this was the time the club actually opened and as soon as there were people on the dance floor I brought in some beat. To be honest, it was not the easiest job for me to maintain a more laid-back pace yet an interesting tension throughout the whole set, in the genre of harder techno the temptation is far too big to just shoot out one banger after the other. But still, the job of the opening DJ is to open the night and to leave space for things yet to come, it made me realize how much fun that can be as well. Somehow it means to limit yourself, yet there are suddenly much more possibilities to experiment! You can explore more deeper sides of your genre, let everything flow into each other way longer, weave a dense web of textures, play with dynamics in different ways than just up, up, up. This set was a really interesting experience for me, where I felt i was growing as a DJ, so I decided to share that with you. Sadly, the battery of my recording device died at some point, so the rest of the 3-hour long set will only continue to exist in memory. Cheers!

We ought to begin the New Year with a high-energy manifestation by @melati3000 

Melati is known for her dynamic, multi-genre approach bringing together the playfulness and relentless energy in a perfect mix. Melati is steadily building her DJ profile, as she holds residencies at Das Booty, Floorless and Sisu. In addition her signature sound has already been noticed in her performances at Unfold, HÖR, Bangface Festival and others. 

After a short hiatus from podcasts, Melati returns with a fierce mix inspired by sounds heard on London dancefloors over recent months. A slight lateral shift from her signature style, the mix is dominated with hard grooves and hypnotic melodies, keeping vocals to a minimum, but still bringing that furious, fast-paced Melati flare.

FRENETIK022 sees Ex_Machina stepping up and taking us back to something we’ve not had in a while with what is an absolute stomper of a mix. Part of local upstarts Voight-Kampff, Ex_Machina has been part of their wild nights at Jaded at Corsica Studios and with a track on their new bumper VA - which as expected is gaining plaudits across board. He has also seen himself establish himself outwith the collective with releases on Khazad Records’ skelping VA and other on Insane Industries’ VA which raised funds for the Italian Red Cross in light of the pandemic that we see ourselves currently experiencing. 

As previously touched upon, his penchant for tunes of the absolutely skelping variety has also seen him feature on the likes of Hard Vision and the AFFIX WORKS series, so we were delighted to have him on board when the initial discussions were had about getting him involved. 

Cheers to Gabe for sending this over and we hope yous are all as into it as we are. Hopefully everyone is safe and well and fingers crossed that sooner rather than later we’ll be back hearing this on Funktion Ones rather than through our laptops. Eoi.
