The Story  ᓚᘏᗢ  ➜
The first time the Telescoping Moons stirred, the sky folded in on itself.

Above the amethyst plains of Lethraea, where forests of glassy mushrooms stretched for horizons and rivers of phosphorescent mist flowed uphill, the night had always been crowded with orbs—seven moons stacked along the spine of the heavens like beads on an invisible thread. Each was carved with glowing glyphs and shifting seas, each a world, each a secret.

They usually glided in slow, stately arcs.

On that particular cycle, they began to move.

The largest moon at the top of the sky dilated, swelling and narrowing, then collapsed into itself like a breathing lung. The second moon slid into its shadow. The third folded into the second. One after another, the celestial bodies telescoped, collapsing inward, each containing all the others, until there was only a single, blinding pearl hanging over Lethraea—too bright, too sharp, dripping radiance like molten quartz.

Creatures all across the plains stopped and stared. Crystal-backed wyrms froze mid-crawl, antennae trembling. Flock-clouds of translucent ray-birds kited into stillness. Beneath a towering grove of mushrooms whose caps resembled cathedral domes, a slender figure made of mycelium and starlight looked up.

This figure was called Caelith.

Caelith’s body was a weave of pale, fibrous strands, like roots grown into the shape of a tall, long-limbed humanoid. Faint bioluminescent patterns crawled under their surface, pulsing in slow, hypnotic waves: spirals, sigils, branching trees of light that shifted with their thoughts. Where a face would be, Caelith had a smooth mask of translucent chitin, behind which two oval cores glowed with soft cyan. Those cores narrowed now, focusing on the telescoping sky.

The moons should not move like that.

Above the mushroom canopy, an aurora of LSD-bright colours bled into existence. It wasn’t the usual shimmer of the upper air; it bent into angular patterns, fractals that pulsed outward, settling onto the ground like a net. Each thread of that net hummed with a whisper only minds could hear.

The mushrooms around Caelith shivered. Spores burst from their gills in slow-motion fountains of neon dust, coiling in spirals that defied gravity. The spores clustered above Caelith’s head, condensing into a shape: a broad, ringed halo of luminous tissue, rippling with tiny eyes and mouths that were not mouths at all but openings into somewhere else.

The Spore-Oracle had awakened.

“Caelith,” it whispered, its many not-mouths moving without moving, sound threading straight into the wanderer’s mind. “The Telescoping has begun too soon.”

Caelith tilted their head. Threads of light shifted under their skin in question marks and nested circles. “The Sky Mechanism?” their thoughts answered, shaped into pulses the Oracle could taste. “It was not meant to fold for another thousand glow-cycles.”
