Mike Vale's "Pretty Woman" was one of the biggest club records of 2011. It hit the top of the sales charts, and its raw, bouncy groove and hooky-as-hell vocal dominated the rising tech-house-leaning DJ sets of the time. We see a return to that loopy style, albeit with a heavier 2024 kick and bass bounce, so we were delighted when Mike dropped off this complete re-imagining of his early 10s anthem. Stripping things back to the original vocal sample and rebuilding the groove from the ground up, he has delivered the kind of no-nonsense club-ready weapon we can imagine hearing a wide range of DJs playing. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Defected Records presents a series of extra special collaborative releases Together, integrating talent from the label’s storied past and the stars of its future, as legendary UKG pioneer Todd Edwards, Caribbean-Dutch duo Shermanology and UK band Rudimental come together for ‘Rain’. The three artists are household names in their own right, and now their ongoing friendship has resulted in this extra special record born out of ‘a place of love’. Todd’s history with Defected is well documented, and the relationship has grown exponentially since the acquisition of his back catalogue in 2021, decorated by frequent sets at the label’s landmark events and flagship festivals, culminating in a Deluxe Edition of his House Masters compilation featuring remixes from modern house and garage legends. One such remix includes Andy and Dorothy Sherman as Shermanology, with their hearty mix of UKG, Caribbean and soul influences permeating Todd’s ‘Show Me A Sign’. The duo made their highly anticipated Defected debut in 2023 with ‘Sometimes’, a record that received major radio play globally and soundtracked the summer that followed. They are joined by Rudimental, the Platinum selling band whose success in both underground and commercial scenes is widely respected, earning UK #1’s and showcasing their new era sound; the group first teased this collaboration at Defected’s ambitious 2024 livestream celebrating its 25th Anniversary, featuring 25 DJs playing B2B. Since launching his own label and event series, WHYNOTUS, renowned DJ-producer hybrid Malóne has been dropping Tech and Afro House heaters left and right. Now, WHYNOTUS is releasing its first compilation, featuring six ethnically-charged house tracks. ‘MIAMI GROOVE VA’ will come into fruition on Friday, April 5th.

Leading off the collaborative project is “Get It,” a hypnotic, percussion-heavy single from Amal Nemer. Layered with exotic vocals, this tune sets the precedent of grooviness for the tracks that follow, forged by the likes of Morpei, Damelo, Sounds Of Rituals, Pablo Alhach, Des & Del, DZR, and Sabrosura Boyz.

One element that separates this compilation from the norm is its ability to unite artists from a broad spectrum of different ethnicities and regions.
