It's a classic understatement to open an introduction such as this by saying that @Source_Direct's music means a lot of things to a lot of different people. But it's true. Having surpassed seminal reputation years ago now, the duo are consistently name-checked by artists in and outside of drum & bass as real inspirations. Theirs was a very poignant kind of drama when it emerged; a playfully experimental formula that's just lasted and lasted. To this day some of their earliest music still sounds futurebound, like it could fully still be out there somewhere, treading an avenue that people are still fully scared to properly explore or embrace. 

One half of Source Direct, Jim Baker, is now back and regularly DJing again and ahead of appearing here in Room One on Friday as part of S.P.Y's Back to Basics party, we're overjoyed to be able to host this exclusive mixtape from Baker himself. As you can imagine, for fanboys like us, this is quite the coup and as such it comes partnered with a gloriously in depth interview over on The Quietus, which he highly recommend you go and read once you've pressed play on the soundcloud player below. In it Baker reveals his plans for new music whilst talking about the early days and the fractures that lead to the duo's eventual split.

@homemadeweapons is an artist who released on labels such as @samuraimusicgroup , @onsetaudio and @anttc1 and also runs his own label @homemadeweaponry. His music is of a kind I class as relentless, tribal & hypnotising.

1. Please tell us about your radio show:

I took on a slot on http://www.afterdarkradio.org alongside some great selectors. I try to put out a 2hr show every Sunday night from 8pm-10pm. It's a great way to push yourself and get deeper into the racks each week. I try to keep it loose with no pre-planned agenda. I usually, if I have time (not often!) I pull out around 50+ records or so that should work together. Usually I pick the first couple of tunes and go from there. It's fun and doesn't always come off! Usually something interesting comes of it! I get a few live listeners as it happens, but the majority of people listen once I upload it to Soundcloud. Sending shouts out to all the After Dark Crew - Aftershock, Remedee, Asperatus, Peso, Ninelives, The Beer Watch Crew (Mikey & RollingLegs), Pablophonic, No9 Kru, Akaichiq, AxonGap. We got out and about for a 6 hr Planet Wax takeover recently, which was a lot of fun... It was great to meet everyone and many beers and tunes went down 🙂

2. If you had the power to hear what someone was thinking, whose thoughts would you want to hear?

 If I could add a little time travel back into the 90s - Can I please have a peek inside Rupert Parkes dome...

⁠DJ Bailey⁠ is an important DJ in the history of Jungle and Drum & Bass, a resident at the legendary ⁠Metalheadz Blue Note Sessions⁠ in the mid 90s, a 10-year BBC 1Xtra DJ in the 00s and of course has a history in Pirate Radio on Energy 87.9 FM. He’s an experienced A&R and label owner with Instasound and the passion for finding and presenting new music runs deep. 


He was one of the first established DJs to support my early music and supported it in his DJ sets in the early 2000s and invited myself and Neptune on to his 1xtra show in 2011 so I was always going to have him up on the podcast. 


We discuss how his background in Pirate Radio shaped his career, being a Metalheadz DJ, streaming his own show ‘Straight From The Bedroom’ on UStream, and his move from cutting edge DJ to passionate archivist and story teller. Make no mistake, Bailey still has his finger on the pulse and continues to host a show on London’s Kool FM. This guy lives for radio and shows no sign of stopping.
