When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. To celebrate the release of the Telepathic Fish compilation, we have a special ‘O Is For Orange 2025’ Bleep Mix from DJ Food.

"A version of this mix first appeared in 2013 at a night to celebrate the release of Boards of Canada’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ LP release. It then morphed into an Audio Video DJ set that I toured around the UK in 2019, playing the Bluedot festival to a packed tent that year. The idea was to thread Boards of Canada’s music with original sample sources, tracks they’d remixed, fan remixes or songs that fitted their sonic blueprint.

I recently resurrected and refined the mix for a gig booking, updating it into a new version. This happened to be a week before I was due to deliver my guest mix to Bleep and it seemed to be too good an opportunity to pass up. I abandoned the mix I was going to deliver and put down the first hour of the ‘Orange’ set including a video mix to go with it. I used stem splitting apps to deconstruct some of the tracks into unique versions before video mixing it all on turntables using Serato then editing the footage in Premiere." - @strictly

Greyhouse was the first of many aliases adopted by Dutch DJ/producer Marcel Hol. In the late 80's the first signs of 90's optimism and euphoria started. Marcel was young, creative and ambitious because he got his hands on some new equipment like the sampler. Electronic music was within reach. Greyhouse landed a recording contract with Hip Hop Records, a dance label founded by Erik Van Vliet based in Rotterdam. In 1989 he released his debut single “Move To The Groove / New Beats The House.” Renaat Vandepapeliere from R & S Records cleverly spotted the record's potential. re-releasing it with “New Beats The House” as the A-side With this new exposure the song became one of the biggest hits of a New Beat sub-genre called Hard Beat. 

“New Beats the House” is peak sampledelia, based on a synthesizer line taken from Kraftwerk “It's More Fun To Compute” and vocal samples from Kraze “The Party” (Gimme a fat beat), Art of Noise “Opus 4” (No sun, no shade), Ice-T “The Hunted Child” (Bangin' for the thrill, man), and Ian McShane reading an excerpt from Ian Penman's essay ”The Annihilation of Rhythm". Weaved throughout is the TB-303 line that made this song an Acid House anthem.  The song also features one of the very first appearances of Jochem Paap aka Speedy J, credited for scratches. This reissue is backed with a 1989 remix by Marcel Hol that adds additional synthesizers and removes some of the vocal samples. On the B-side is Detroit’s Jared Wilson with his 7777 Acid Remix full of modulated 303, reverberated snap-claps, and a sample from Jesse Jackson’s speech 'I Am Somebody' from Wattstax Music Festival in 1972. Also included is “Move Your Assit” (Acid Version), the second single by Greyhouse. The track was originally released in 1989, and showcases a searing acid line over a beat from Stock, Aitken, & Waterman's “S.S. Paparazzi”. 

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1989 R & S Records edition, featuring a drawing of figures dancing on a yellow vinyl record set against a bright pink background. Each copy includes a neon pink and yellow sticker and a postcard with liner notes by Marcel Hol.
