People were saying that Norwegian fjordmakossa had died and gone sterile. But the late, great ethnomusicologist and folklorist Alan Lomax begged to differ. In his famous field study report on the subject he wrote:” After days with nothing other to show for than wet clothes and an itchy crotch, I heard a sound echoing from the hills. It sounded like a herd of drunken zebras, or was it a cross between a flamenco and a monkey (a Fonkey?).  I later discovered this nocturnal specie to be the band hubbabubbaklubb. A magical lantern in an endangered genre we all knew and loved as fjordmakossa, with an extraordinary expression that have later allowed them to successfully populate a diverse range of habitats – from deserts to islands to tropical forests.”

The shelf by the toilet in my childhood home is jam-packed with old memorabilia. And in between all the bits and bobs, I found the greatest objet d’art of them all: Hubbas soundtrack from the late, great film director Arild Kristos’ magnum opus, “Eddie & Suzanne” (1975). A classic, romantic Shakespearean road movie.

One of those who really hated the film, and who should therefore be listened to is the renowned late film critique Pål Bang Hansen. He wrote:

“Arild Kristo wants you to think that lust is all-consuming love, when really it's just endorphins. What makes things even worse is what must be one of the most gloopy and phallic film scores in recent memory: hubbabubbaklubb’s “Eddie & Suzanne”, which seduces teenage girls into paroxysms of romantic grief… blæh!

From his studio retreat in the heart of the Norwegian forest, Raaja Bones astral projects to adistant paradise, glancing the frosty tips of Norwegian fir trees on his way to exotic locations.

Trading the Scandinavian fjord for a beach in Miami, Raaja finds a bounce in his step, moonwalking his way across groovy keys and shuffling beats through Boardwalks . A sonic palette echoing with the reverberations of bygone days, playing on a collective nostalgia, a Kodak moment turned gif, frozen on a telephone screen.

Hazy chords and playful melodies glisten against temperate rhythmical zones as they roll through the arrangement. Disembodied vocals float in a steamy fog above warm tones, as Raaja’s voice passes through the record like a spectral dream. Almost 8 years on from its original release, Ubuntu Tutu and Molepolole (aka Sun City) realizes a destiny conceived on dance floors, with Olefonken updating these tracks for his Snorkel imprint.

“In the way I would have wanted it back in the day, if I had the experience and means to do so back in 2012. “

Across two tracks, impatient rhythms and repetitive forms look out from the metropolis towards the savannah where organic progressions and dry percussion take the lead, imprinting a romantic memory of a primal intuition in the shadow of a setting sun.

To be sure that all the wire’s in his new studio was correctly plugged in, the first thing Olefonken did was a remake of Joystick Jay’s unreleased track called, "Trafikklyset".

Every single sound is from one source only, the Korg Ms-10 (with loads of processing of course) which resulted in a pretty scruffy and lo-fi version if you will. 

A couple of lockdowns later we figured it could possibly be a nice little treat for our friends and followers, wishing you all a happy and safe 2021!✨
