PO FOLK sees Berlin newcomers make a welcome return to Klasse Recordings, their second EP for the label is a stripped to the bone work-out of all killer no filler.

PO FOLK comes in two versions, the 'HATE' version kicks off with distorted kicks and stabs before dropping to a devastating buzzy bassline. Techno and House in equal form, the track is perfect mix of light and dark. Vocals come courtesy of the group themselves, re-voicing a classic track that might be familiar to some.

The 'LOVE' version brings some melody and warmth into play, but still retains all the analogue fuzz and nastiness. MPC style sample cut ups ride the beat and transport the track to another heavy bassline and vocal chat.

Berlin based Panorama Bar favourites, Analogue Cops join the ranks of Klasse Recordings with a unique take on the title track. Playing out as a live jam session, the Restoration Records duo dub out the original parts and turn in a version that is as relentless as it is intriguing. Heavy on the bass and with double the weirdness, their interpretation is sure to cause havoc on any willing dancefloor.

Wrapping up the EP is 'Black Widow', an atmospheric and dynamic track that builds slowly before introducing a huge sub bass. Reduced to only the most essential of parts, 'Black Widow' is sure to play out well in any forward thinking DJ set.

Let say it clearly, Filipe is one of our favourite guitar player. We love his very personal approach of building his music. Building is the right word here, as his music is so intense that it can be compared to sculpture: rough, soft, massive, ethereal, delicate. He oversteps the contemplative and cinematographic comparison that is regularly used for instrumental music.

With one guitar, he uses the sound to create matter and shape it with melodies. And silence. The moments he plays are equally important as the moments he doesn’t. Perfectly balanced between fragility and assertion, Filipe’s music can not lie, but is life. Sede e Morte pays tribute to great guitar players, with reinterpretation of songs by John Fahey, Peter Green and José Afonso.

The artwork itself is a painting made by Filipe based on an image of the Heidelberg Dance of Death book (1448) and almost a perfect imitation of John Fahey's "Dance of Death" - which uses an image from the same book.

For a while this record would be only side A... A home recording of a small rehearsal that turned out to be 3 covers or versions of things i love. Especially cançao de embalar, that my father used to sing and play to me as a lullaby. In the end, it seemed quite fitting that what envisioned as a protest record, or an homage record, would end up after all having a second side, with the help of guitarist Norberto Lobo, whom I admire and learn a lot from. Our music is different, but sometimes, sometimes, when planets align, our pathos hits the same spot. To end it all,something that was on my head from the beginning: the title is from a track by the Great Carlos Paredes. I feel that all i know is a very fragile aglomeration of all the work of guitarists i love. Records are made of records. So this is my thank you note. It had to be stated, this thirst and death that keeps us playing.

On this EP we get three out there diverse tracks with the title cut being a moody rhythmic, heads down yet upbeat percussion driven affair. 'Jakobs Dream' steps into the abstract tweaked out techno world, while 'Huh' which fills the entire b-side is a massive massive electro cut for the floor.

Tackling the highlights of Nick Höppner's recent full-length Folk is rock solid BR fav, The Black Madonna, who has (surprise, surprise!) turned it into a stormer. Accompanied, as usual, by an eminently "Relate"-able message of humble gratitude, the real calling cards here are the rising, rousing synths that wouldn't sound out of place on a vintage Severed Heads 12". We're informed that it's a Panorama Bar melter, which makes sense: what begins an inviting outstretched palm winds up a slamming clenched fist.

The Folk remix 12" is out very soon, via Ostgut Ton. Keep eyes peeled.

Since the turn of the decade Token has by and large been an exclusive platform for the music of Inigo Kennedy, Ø [Phase] and Ctrls. The Belgian label has, however, remained on point by putting out formidable productions by Rich Oddie & Ancient Methods’ Eschaton project, German powerhouse Rødhåd and Spanish heavy weights Oscar Mulero and Christian Wünsch as Spherical Coordinates, to some intercontinental fare by Xhin and Go Hiyama. Token, an iron clad operation continuously manufacturing unyielding techno, has always, deep within its impenetrable shell, had a soft spot for British techno. And following a reissue of Mark Broom’s “Two”, maintaining the glacial release rate of Rodz-Konez legend Makaton, and welcoming Surgeon to its fold with the thunderous Fixed Action Pattern 12”, the Belgian label seeks out some fresh UK blood by inviting James Shaw, aka Sigha, to debut on the label with a stylistically sleek and suitably booming 12”, Our Father / A Better Way Of Living.

On equal part, Sigha’s Token debut chalks up another milestone for the Berlin-based Englishman, not only because his name is now up there with the likes of the aforementioned, but Our Father / A Better Way Of Living provides Sigha with his first release away from a label that Shaw’s not intrinsically related to. Prior to this it’s been Scuba’s Hotflush, Shifted’s Avian, James Ruskin’s Blueprint and Shaw’s own Our Circula Sound that have unleashed his productions, and Sigha now steps up to deliver Token a linear 12” full of cosmic flavour and warehouse attitudes that judiciously falls between the sonic aesthetics of Inigo Kennedy’s twinkling melancholia and the interlocking kick drums and basslines of Ø [Phase]. And there’s no doubting that both Token and Sigha are better for it.

Killer Nighter

Receiving promos from the mighty Omega Supreme Records is always a cause of great excitement at Boiler Room HQ. So naturally, we stuck the Debut – offered up by Germany's mysterious modern-funk musketeers, First Touch – on the office stereo as soon as it landed in our inbox. 

The EP's opener, "Beweg Dein Körper", is a masterclass in the science of concocting a silky smooth dancefloor burner. <p>The label bosses The Advent and Industrialyzer team up with Hugo Paixao and they are releasing an excellent EP on Codeworks. Kicking off this EP is the title track ‘Mutant’ which creates a big chunky affair full of dark beats with smooth percussion on the foreground. A very nice and intense production with smooth string getting along. ‘Twisted’ follows, featuring stabbing and rolling deep basslines mixed up with nice and melodic riffs. Can be better than that? Three excellent producers getting along and they produce two techno anthems for Codeworks. Enjoy</p>
