Dangerous

I lost my mom 10 years ago. It was sudden and her and I hadn’t spoken in 8 months.  Our relationship was always tumultuous.  She, a narcissistic and raised me to appease her and tame her many moods.  She would publicly show her affection and praise and privately withhold love and care.  I never knew where I stood with her and she always made sure I knew I was dispensable.   
Even tho she was all these things and more, she was also a fierce woman who loved so many others.  She cared for the immigrants, the poor, the lonely.  She spoke 7 languages and never met a stranger. She carved her own path in a world that didn’t want her and she did, in her own way, teach me to be strong and to live with purpose.  Butterfly was written in an effort to celebrate her in an honest way.  I remember the day I wrote it.  It was at the very early stages of the pandemic and I was just uncovering the abuse I had suffered under her hands.  But I missed her so much.  I longed for her laughter and her skin and most of all her love.  
Love is messy and we all carry so much hurt that it’s difficult to love freely.  I know she did her best and I hold nothing but gratitude towards her, because in the end, she did teach me to spread my lil wings and to live life with purpose.  Butterfly is a celebration of what remains between us- nothing but love.
