The Department of Social Development spoke to Lottie de Vries, Principal at Quest School for Learners with Autism in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape prior to the handover of an ICT Lab on 31 July 2015. The lab was realised through the partnership of Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu and the MTN South Africa Foundation.

Mr Washington Molapo (63) has a 12 year old son, Tukelo Molapo, who is autistic. He is from Kwamagxaki outside Port Elizabeth but his son attends Quest School for Learners with Autism. We speak to him about his experience in raising a child with autism.

The Department of Social Development speaks to Patrick Mokgatle, a partner in a cooperatives business called Matlala Letsema, based in Brits, in the Madibeng District. Mr Mokgatle is attending the Cooperative Imbizo in Rustenburg, hosted by The Department of Social Development (13/14 August 2015). The fifth Annual Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament – hosted by the Department of Social Development in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Free State Provincial Legislature – is set to tackle a number of serious issues to do with the protection of children in the country.
 
Among the topics to be discussed by child parliamentarians in the three-day gathering is forced child marriages – also known as ukuthwala, the death of young boys in initiation schools, child killings, the death of young girls due to illegal termination of pregnancies, and violence in schools.  These issues will be discussed over two days in commissions, starting October 5, which will be followed by a sitting of the Children’s Parliament on October 7 2015
