LISTENING POST: Batch 543

This song is written in a classic singer-songwriter style and shares honest reflections on life today.  Between the Worlds is a contemplative track from the perspective of someone looking back, assessing what’s been but also looking forwards, trying to make sense of what’s still to come.

Between the Worlds was written in June 2024 while I was on tour around Germany, and recorded in collaboration with musician and producer, Tobias Thiele, at his studio, Blue Lizard Studio, in Funkenhagen (Germany), in July 2024.

‘’Tired pop never sounded this good’’


Emerging from the vibrant indie-alt-pop scene of
Brighton. Sock Drawer, the self-proclaimed "tired pop"
band, release their latest single "Don't Have the Energy."

The track is a tongue-in-cheek take on the
pressures of creating radio-ready hits in an industry that
demands constant perfection. it’s unapologetically laid-
back—reflecting the band's wry sense of humour and
unique approach to modern pop.

Fresh from their headline debut at Glastonbury’s Hive
stage the band keep their true identities and creative
process closely guarded, one thing remains
unmistakable - their music reverberates with a profound
depth of emotion and creativity. The duo have been
working alongside James Dring (Gorillaz, Jamie T) on
co-production & Mix on their debut album which is set
for release in 2025.

The pair explain about the process of making the song:

"This track was made using Logic Pro x. The guitar lead
was plugged into input 3, and the synth, input 4,
ensuring maximum audio quality."

King Of The Grass

With a vocal that's raw and honest, B of Briz confronts and consoles in this alt hip hop contemplation. In this melancholic retrenchment with a driving bassline, B asks: what happens when stuff’s gone really badly wrong? How do we resist and recover and regroup? Written for my brother, a lion a kindness, who showed me what it is to be truly loved. 

I wrote Joe, in an attempt to describe my grief, but grief really is impossible to describe, everyone’s relationship with it is unique and so very intricate in its outpouring and implosion. You can’t know it until it lands at your door. 

To try and convey the depths of grief, the picture of it, what it is truly like, it’s visceral manifestation, you can’t, you really can’t, nor can it ever really be truly understood. But I really, had in a natural way, wanted to try to with this song. 
Untimely bereavement grief means a life and family are left incomplete, unfinished, there is no solution. Not even close to having had enough laps around the sun, woken to a new day. There is no resolution. 

It’s now been over 6000 days and nearly 17 years since Joe came home and my hope in sharing the days, was that it might make people to see just why it pulls you apart, as it has, me. But also, I wanted to sing out loud just how much I love Joe, that too, like grief is infinite.

Joe my big bro is/was/will always be a lion of kindness, compassionate, selfless, he took notice of the little things, and a joy-giving ball of smiles, calming hugs and giggly shoulders. As kind strangers as to his friend’s or family. He showed me what love is, what it means to be truly truly loved, he was our protector. He showed what it is to live with adventure at hand and a giggle in the other. An honest man, only barely a man at 21.
