Leftover Light

I rise at noon, the curtains drawn
Check the phone, pretend to yawn
Coffee brews, it's day-old news
Another day I didn't choose

My mirror's cracked, my plants are dead
The screens just scream inside my head
No post arrives, no knocks, no calls
Just silence bouncing off the walls

I may as well be living on Mars
Waving at Earth through electric bars
All of my friends are digital ghosts
They type "I'm fine" but none get close
This little flat's my capsule in space
Orbiting time I cannot replace

I talk to God through wires and streams
He rarely answers—typical, it seems
I dress for work, though work's long gone
I play old tapes and hum along

The neighbors moved, or maybe died
I watched their lights blink out one night
The city hums like distant stars
Yet no one sees me from their cars

I may as well be living on Mars
Updating apps while counting the scars
Once there was love, or so I'm told
Now all that's left are texts gone cold
This hermitage built day by day
From all the things I didn't say

They said "connect," so I complied
I've got a thousand likes and none applied
To who I am beneath the glass
A fading shadow, hard to pass

My rent's on time, my soul is late
I guess I've learned to hibernate
They'll find my bones in ten years' time
Still in my chair, still writing rhyme

I may as well be living on Mars
Tracing my thoughts in cookie jars
The Earth moved on, I stayed behind
An astronaut of my own mind
