Music to Pull Your Strings: Mixed by Async Figure

Bienvenida TraTraTrax Sound Sistema, the joint alias of TraTraTrax co-founders Verraco, Nyksan and DJ Lomalinda.

As founders of the Colombian imprint, the trio have led a wave of experimentation and innovation in the global club underground, platforming the hybrid electronic sounds of Latin America while also pushing UK-born genres such as dubstep and garage into new sonic territories. Running alongside our November issue cover story, written by Rachel Grace Almeida, this cover mix is a deep, near-three hour rhythmic odyssey through destabilising techno, murky bass music, guaracha, dubstep and much more. There may even be some never-before-heard forthcoming TraTraTrax releases thrown into the fold – listen closely.

Australian NHS boss Galtier and UK label Synes co-founder Druid team up for a collaborative EP 'Stone Hardware'. The EP’s four tracks are a collection of solo works and collaborative efforts from both producers recorded throughout the duration of late 2020 and early 2021, taking form as a hybrid collection of club-ready dancefloor destroyers.

The established end product of this EP is evident in the release’s title – an organic, primitive sound palette that frequents Galtier’s dynamic sound as heard in the last few years, combined with Druid’s mechanized futurism taken straight from the streets of Neo-Tokyo. Each producer has offered a distinctive focus that they have merged together into one evolving, unanticipated synthesis of proto and post-earthly sound.

"Lo Oscuro" es el EP debut de CARAL, artista residente del barrio Saavedra en Buenos Aires. BPMs lentos, atmósferas oníricas, samples variados y mezclando estéticas del tango, murga y cumbia dan lugar a este proyecto con el que Santa Sede abre su ciclo 2024.

Además de los cinco cortes del álbum, Lo Oscuro incluye cinco reinterpretaciones a cargo de lxs artistas locales FEDRA, OKTE, Cimarrón, JM Croce y Erótica Castro.

El EP se estrenará el próximo 12 de febrero, puedes hacer el preorder en Bandcamp.

If Bitter Babe was a perfume, her scent would be animalic—heavy musk, bergamot, worn leather and burnt spices. The Bogotá-born, Miami-bred and now Berlin-based artist has a heady, ultra-rhythmic sound that feels made for sweltering summer nights and feral fantasies. Combining pan-Latin styles with hard drum and industrial touches, she's crafted a singular mood that defines her DJing and production: hazy, high-energy and sensual.

Bitter Babe's ascent on the international circuit has been tied to her role in Miami's electronic renaissance. Whether it's proto-reggaeton, dense ambient or guaracha, her sets and productions are characterised by evocative low-end, darting synths and distorted frequencies that exude drama. With releases on TraTraTrax, Air Texture and SVBKVLT, she's cemented her position as an experimentalist, leaving the door open for more deconstruction and abstraction.

As cofounder of multidisciplinary project LATITUDES, Bitter Babe seeks to unify Latin America's electronic music communities. Her mixes are a great source for discovering under-the-radar acts from Peru, Brazil and beyond, some of whom are featured on her RA podcast. Starting with subby downtempo before moving onto swampy baile funk, technoid mutations of dembow and cheeky UKG, it showcases her expertise for trippy yet deeply kinetic grooves.

The Mix is our new online mix and interview series, dedicated to the spectrum of electronic music from around the globe, exploring sounds and stories from the early days of rave to the future.

Mixmag has a long history of publishing mixes, from our legendary cover CDs accompanying the print magazine to our worldwide video streams in The Lab. Last year we celebrated 40 years in the game and The Mix now arrives as a fresh outlet to document DJs and the musical movements they represent, showcasing their sound alongside an in-depth interview. The design pays homage to a previous Mixmag logo from the ealy ’90s, nodding to our heritage while using the square and rectangular building blocks to construct an aesthetic that works cohesively with contemporary design elements and digital motion systems.

We’ll still be bringing you the Cover Mix, The Lab and occasional sets in other formats, with The Mix is taking the place of our In Session and Impact features, intending to bring an updated look and vision to our flagship weekly DJ profile and sequencing them into one place, without separation. Martyyna’s debut album Written In The Scars is an ironic play on the cliché that our destiny is written in the stars. More likely, our life’s stories are influenced by the scars we carry within us and by our coming to terms with them. Martyyna looks for such confidence on the single This Time, where a reverberating clock chime intertwines with her hazy vocals submerged in sampled water droplets, owl calls, or birdsong. Emerging at times only to repeat a hopeful wish: “This time... don’t make me cry.” A music video for the track, shot in the Canary Islands’ desolate and burned-out land, serves as an inspiration for the album's visual design and the future AV set with Igor Lorok presented at the Lunchmeat Festival in September 2023. The album cover views the body as a similar landscape, recording the imprints and bruises of past happenings and absorbing them into itself. The story of finding the strength to keep going continues on the second single, Distorted, inspired by data loss after Martyyna’s first live-set. Past feelings of anger and misery melt into a complex and stuttering production, her deepened vocals intertwine with jittering synth arrangements, slowly rising in pitch and gaining courage. Distant, muffled echoes are trying to break free, regressed traumas are coming to the surface, demanding attention.

After a process of healing, overcoming and getting lost in a dream, the voice of Martyyna fuses with that of the Czech producer Oliver Torr on Sunshine Girls and with the musician Portento’s on the closing track Invitation. The album ends with light, calming duets – two voices finding harmony at last, extending a euphoric invitation. An invitation to breathe in. To rest. To finally not be scared of one’s own self.

On Written In The Scars, Martyyna delves deeper into her work with vocals, first introduced on her EP AWAKEN, and perfects her layering of textures, tonal shifts, gradation of rhythms and deconstruction of string instruments. Rather than awaking, however, she’s now plunging into more atmospheric dreamscapes. Crafted with both chaos and care, Martyyna’s tracks are made of diverse building blocks reflecting her mood shifts and despairs as well as her meticulous craftswomanship gained working as an architect. Only here, forming physical structures in her waking life is interchanged with sonic worldbuilding of her dreams.

Nick León (@NICKLEON) is an artful DJ and producer from Miami who has always operated at the experimental fringes of electronic music. Though he has always pushed at the boundaries he never fully loses sight of the dance floor while colliding reggaeton, techno, ambient, dubstep and hip-hop. He is a frequent collaborator and something of an album specialist who most recently took inspiration from Florida’s diverse sub-aquatic ecosystems on his superb Projections of a Coral City album alongside Coral Morphologic.

Nick will be joining us at Dekmantel Festival 2024 and this week's mix is a great way to keep you going until then. It's an hour of loose-limbed and largely genre-less rhythm with a naturalistic feel. There's a blend of filtered and futuristic voices and centuries-old dancing rituals that take you to the heart of an ancient rainforest, all with his signature Latin flavours and an undercurrent dembow-laced beats.

As a producer and DJ, TSVI is in the form of his life—which you can't always say for an artist a decade in. He's been an enduring presence through several underground cycles for a reason: the man knows how to flow.

TSVI's RA Podcast features a solid number of new and forthcoming cuts from the current vanguard pushing club music forward, amongst them Verraco, Surusinghe, DJ Plead, Doctor Jeep, DJ JM, WOST and Dj Babatr—who just dropped a split 12" with TSVI on TraTraTrax last month.

Alongside the names you might expect, TSVI also leans into a streak of personal history. On RA.944 you'll hear fast, deep and percussive '90s and '00s cuts from Spain, Latin America and his native Italy, with a particular focus on the kind of playful progressive trance minted by the late, great Franchino. It makes for a truly dynamite mix.
