Easy Listening

I woke early, before the birds, a couple of weekends ago, couldn't get back to sleep so I got up, made a cup of coffee and wandered through to my studio, put on my headphones and fired up Reason. I was playing around with the basis of this tune when James came in and asked to hear what I was doing. As he was listening he made the comment "Sounds like it has stars in it" which I thought was wonderful. So later that day I got him to say it again into the mic. His brother Alex added the "Wow" and "Look at all the stars". They both laughed and giggled as they were doing this, so I kept that stuff too. Their cousin Lil chimes in towards the end too. So a bit of a family affair this one and a little bit of fun from Soft E Studios.

Maybe we'll get around to doing another someday :)

Another Bad Day - Boom Babies International - (trigtrigger & Soft Enerji)

I found the image used for this track while searching the net for something completely unrelated. As soon as I saw this picture I was stunned. I found the image desolate, cold, yet somehow quite beautiful. I was immediately inspired to write this music. I imagined a cold wind, metallic undertones and a Siren song to draw me...and hopefully you...in. 

The image is by photographer Simon Roberts http://simoncroberts.com and can be found in his Motherland collection here: http://motherlandbook.com/. The derelict ships are somewhere on the Kola Peninsula in north western Russia. Simon toured Russia over a year and took some amazing shots. Well worth a look!

The Cold Ships

This is the first new track since our tree-change move to the country. I thought I would have more time on my hands but it didn't work out that way.............all is good though and the little dudes have started school now :)
I've used a couple of signature Soft Enerji instruments (the horn and the piano.....just couldn't help myself) as well as some new sounds and fx from Reason's Rack Extensions. The next thing on my shopping list is a new mic as I really struggled to get the vox sounding right, I'm still not happy with it but it will have to do for now. Also note that there is something going on with SC's compression on the intro. I've noticed this before on other tracks and there is nothing I can do about it. Hope you enjoy!

++++. PROFILE NOTES ++++

Once a wannabe, not yet a has been.

It had been over a decade since I put together a song,
and for that matter basically walked away from music altogether.
Losing hope that I would ever have the time to put into music again,
I finally gave away my 3rd music studio.
I ran across SoundCloud around 2013,
and thought I might take what few songs I had recorded, 
and lay them to rest there.
And there they languished.

HOWEVER, around 2017 I went back to SoundCloud
and began listening a little more and a little more,
and actively taking a part in visiting the sites
of so many wonderful musicians and beautiful songs.
Also, more and more often I would discover that these artists
were blossoming everywhere around the world,
and most definitely worthy of high praise and compliments.

Then suddenly, these old dead soundtracks right here
began to have a bit of life breathed back into them.
From the kind words that began to come trickling in,
I thought, maybe, someday I might give this music thing a try again.

The thing that finally pushed me into action
was a particular SoundCloud artist…Sander Heerings,

Not only was he encouraging,
but he began faithfully responding to a few questions,
then a barrage of them.

The final result seemed to be that after a couple of months,
the Old Grinder now has a 4th studio and, finally, a new song.
I hope there may be many more to come.

Thank you Sander, and to the multitude that have dropped in
to listen to these old songs, 
and most of all, for perking up my spirits.

Soft Enerji is Mark Blane. Originally from Scotland, now a born again Australian.

I like to make music in my spare time although spare time can be hard to come by.

I compose in Cubase 14, Ableton Live 12 and Reason 13. Among many plugins I also use Native Instuments Komplete 15 Ultimate Collectors Edition.

I have a Komplete Kontrol S61 Mk2 keyboard and a Maschine Mk3. My Bass guitars are a Warwick Corvette Fretless, a Schecter Diamond Series and a Cort Semi-Acoustic.
