Episode 6 - Softmatter

Softmatter is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist, music producer, vocalist, and DJ exploring mutant, discordant electronics, alongside bouncing, stony drums and pitch-shifted vocals that travel between steepled choral motifs. She has released on renowned labels such as Halocline Trance, Infinite Machine and Berlin-based Soulfeeder. 


Her mix is ​​both a dark and melancholic approach to the thoughtful moments on the dance floor, situating the listener somewhere between dark ambient, industrial and the hazy afterglow of the vaporwave era, while at the same time giving us a glimpse into her hyper-futuristic vision of club music, enriched with elements of deconstructed club, post club and neo-trance.

@hadji-hajj is a French artist and composer who recently debuted on the @bfdmrec. He is a co-founder of Dawn, member of Schnell Records, which develops the concept of Dadaism in  music, and host of Souffrance FM on LYL Radio, that is built around contemporary musical movements, from trap to post-internet experimentations and futuristic beats. 

For the Tightmix series, Hajj has prepared a story with "different colors and moods," which combines the soundtrack from anime 'Perfect Sadness' by Masahiro Ikumi, eerie screams from 'Crushed' by Ronce, French hip-hop from Freeze Corleone, grime by Big Shot, jungle from Dom Perignon & Djin and dub by Systemwide - all variety of genres that fully reflect the artist's vision of modern music.

Swan Meat with YOUR SICKLY SPIRIT - 12 November 2020

"I’ve been thinking about and listening to SOPHIE’s work since the news of her passing. I’ve been trying to listen to her whole production discography; and I’m struck by the sheer breadth of sounds and ideas that she created while she was with us. 

What her work shows me is that as an artist, musically you can do it all: she forces her listener to never categorise or place her within the limited confines of a single genre; her sounds manage to move through and with so many different kinds of people and musical spaces - she had this unique ability to facilitate world building with her audience during her performances and through everything that she did.

Shilla invited me to contribute to a mix for her series Struma+Iodine, and it feels right to select SOPHIE’s music for this. We should be listening to this together in a room somewhere to process this monumental loss - but instead, I’ve put together some of her tracks that mean the most to me and tried to express the vastness and complexity of her work, although this is just my interpretation.

What’s really helped these past few weeks is seeing the sheer multiplicity in the ways of understanding and celebrating her life and work; so I’ll link to those mixes here (all of which I would highly recommend):
