LINEAR BELLS - Silence (Preview from ST13)

Drawing inspiration from oceans, forests and folklore, Vargkvint is the musical project of Stockholm-based multi-artist Sofia Nystrand. After self-releasing her low-key debut-EP Brus in 2016, it was picked up for re-release by French label Soft Recordings the consecutive year, and her first fullength effort, the concept-album Hav was released in April 2019 through Piano And Coffee Records. 
 
Combining evocative melodies and a playful approach to arrangement and instrument usage, Vargkvint’s music falls neatly between the definitions of folk, modern classical, pop and experimental music. She has on several occasions toured internationally, performing at stages such as Q3Ambientfest in Potsdam, Germany, together with her artistic collaborator Jakob Lindhagen

New album ‘Can You Hear Me’ out on Flaming Pines on 22 November 2024 attempts to find common ground between a young human and threatened birds in this time of the Anthropocene and recreates the calls of endangered Australian bird species from recordings of the vocalisations of a four-month-old boy, accompanied by a lonesome, wistful autoharp. Previous works ‘Waiting for The Great Reset’ (Flaming Pines, 2020) addresses scale, degradation and renewal; 'Suddenly woken by the sound of stillness' (Flaming Pines, 2017), built from recordings made along the Trans-Siberian Railway; 'Transitions' (3LEAVES, 2015), made from fragments of sound from everyday life; 'Domestic Cinema' (Wood & Wire/New Weird Australia, 2013), composed from recordings of archaic equipment at the Telecommunications Museum in Melbourne, household objects, typewriter and drum kit; and ‘Internal Temporal Order’ (Sensory Projects, 2011), which was made in 24 hours using a standard acoustic drumkit, metallophone, brooms and brushes, and bits and pieces as part of The 24-hour Drawing Project. Also co-founder and drummer of veteran Melbourne instrumental band ‘This is Your Captain Speaking’, who have released 3 internationally acclaimed albums over the last 10 years, toured Europe and the UK, played the Sydney Opera House and signed to Resonant Records (London).

I'm a former A&R manager for a few labels, ran a couple of my own in collaboration with some good men of taste, and currently run a blog and help artists where I can.  If I was following you and am not now, it is only because I have added you to my blog and <a href="http://amiscellany.info/wiki/">wiki</a>, where I can follow more easily.  I hate friend limits, so this is my way around it.

I'm a fan of experimental ambient, sound-art and global music/sounds, and then some. 

Between 2012 - 2016, I broadcast In the Quiet from the studios of PBS 106.7FM. My main intention was to explore ambient music from around the world in all of its forms - music that gilds, and sometimes engulfs our silences. I still fill in on PBSFM occasionally, predominantly on Hannah McKittrick's Soak - https://www.pbsfm.org.au/program/soak

Every here and there I'll post some mixes - I hope you enjoy them. ( Essentially, I'm using works created by musicians as colours on a palette - for an aural painting. That's how I see and would like my mixes to be received. )
